Emerson stayed up until 11:00pm that night in the library, completing Mattheo's half of their group assignment. It was a drawn out night for her, much longer than she initially anticipated. She didn't leave until Madam Pince finally kicked her out, extinguishing the oil lamps and ushering her away. She was the last student left.
There was an hour after Mattheo walked out that was a complete waste of time. She didn't even pick up the essay. For some time, the half-finished assignment stared back at her on the table, completely motionless and untouched. It seemed to be mocking her, reminding her that Mattheo's mood abruptly changed like a light switch when Anthony stopped to speak with her.
The library felt eerily quiet without his presence, which was amusing since she spent most of the entire night wishing he'd disappear from sitting across from her. She honestly felt like she might've preferred for him to be there. The tension hung heavy in the air when he stormed away as she sat in her seat frozen.
He only left her two inches to write, but it seemed to be the most challenging section for her to work through. Her mind was not switched on anymore, as it usually was when she was completing homework late at night. She was entirely stunned by Mattheo's enraged and sudden departure, which entirely ripped apart her concentration. Her mind was left to mull over Mattheo's words and the weight of his anger. She couldn't understand it, or him. He was a complicated book without words written across the page.
She couldn't help but rack her brain during that first hour, but not about the Potions subject, lycanthropy or the Wolfsbane potion. She was trying to make sense of Mattheo's outburst. The same questions kept playing over and over in her mind, like a broken record player. Why did he storm out like that? Why did the appearance of Anthony get him so riled up? They weren't sworn enemies that she knew of, so there was no reason for Mattheo to become so infuriated. Was it truly a matter of him seeing it as a betrayal of your shared responsibility to complete the assignment? Even for him, it seemed like such an extreme reaction to a simple conversation.
Though his reaction was intense and irrational, she reminded herself that it was deeply rooted in his complex character. He was a ticking time bomb, that was dangerously close to going off at any time. She reminded herself that he was impossible to understand, no matter how hard anyone tried.
However, as Emerson stared at the unfinished essay on the desk, she knew one thing for sure - The assignment still needed to be completed, and no amount of curiosity and confusion could change that. She reached over the table and pulled Mattheo's scroll of parchment towards her. She began to read his writing.
Mattheo's handwriting was messy, yet legible enough for her to read. She expected some half-hearted attempt at the assignment, with his real focus on making Emerson irritated by his sarcastic remarks. Instead, she was surprised. His part about the properties of the Wolfsbane Potion was written brilliantly. She didn't even need to change anything, which never happened on group assignments.
