Mattheo watched Emerson, his chest tightening with each word she hissed at him. "You're nothing but a coward, Riddle."

A coward? He wanted to laugh at the absurdity of the insult, but the heat rising in his chest burned too much for it to come out. Her words and anger stung, striking a very important nerve of his, but he couldn't let her see that. Not now. Not ever. His eyes darkened, locking onto her with a fury he couldn't fully control.

She has no idea what I deal with. What I've been through. No one except Theo and Enzo truly knew about the pressure from his father to execute his malicious plans, the relentless expectations and the darkness he could never quite escape. But, Emerson somewhat did as well, because he shared it with her. He shared that hidden side of himself with her, and now she was glaring at him because she believed she understood his life. She believed in him to be better.

Emerson stood there, trying to look so strong and defiant as she pulled her books closer to her chest, but he could see right through it all. His eyes didn't fail to notice the way her hands trembled or how her voice shook just enough. It should've made him feel something, perhaps guilt or remorse for his cruelness but it didn't. It only fed into the anger that was brewing a storm.

"Coward? You don't know anything about me, Wilmore. You never did," He bit out. The words came out before he could stop them, sharper and colder than he intended. The flash of hurt in her eyes gave him the satisfaction he thought he craved, but it wasn't what he wanted. It just made him feel worse.

But, he had no choice except to press and push. He wanted to shift the focus away from the way that she saw through his carefully constructed mask. He needed to stay in control and hold onto the anger. If he didn't... Well, the the alternative was not an option. He was not going to show her his vulnerability, not when they weren't friends anymore.

She didn't back down. Of course, she didn't. Emerson never did. She stood taller, her voice shaking with anger as she accused him of shutting her out and ruining everything.

His chest tightened as her words struck closer to the truth than he wanted to admit. Ruined everything? She was the one who said they couldn't be friends anymore, although it was his actions that was the catalyst for it all. He crushed the guilt as quickly as it appeared, locking it away beneath a layer of cruelty he had perfected over the years. He wouldn't let her see the mess he was inside him over their fall out.
