One of the 'exciting' parts of starting your Fifth-Year at Hogwarts meant that you were finally old enough to be invited to the parties. Everyone, particularly the socialites, looked forward to starting their Fifth-Year for that sole reason. A night full of music, dancing, smoking, underage drinking, flirting and kissing. It was a necessity for most.
Of course, if it wasn't your House who was throwing the party, you needed to be invited from someone in that House, otherwise you weren't able to attend. Being invited to the other house parties was never going to be an issue for Emerson and Olivia once they reached their Fifth-Year. They were both pretty girls, which meant a lot of guys were interested in them. Even if the feeling wasn't necessarily mutual, they still always received an invitation one way or another. They also had the upper hand because Olivia was automatically invited to the Gryffindor House Parties because of her relationship with George, and Emerson was still invited by the Hufflepuffs because of her relationship with Cedric. The Slytherin parties they could live without; they previously heard rumours that they were rambunctious and unrestrained.
While that prospect made Olivia pleased and excited when the first event for the year rolled through to Emerson's hands from a Sixth-Year Hufflepuff, Emerson was far from sharing the same energy. There was a time that she looked forward to attending parties once she made it to her Fifth-Year. A time where life was significantly easier, and she actually had a boyfriend to spend those parties with. She used to imagine sitting on a couch, drinking and laughing with Cedric or dancing with him embarrassingly in a corner.
The thought of attending a party now, was overwhelming. It made her feel like the walls were closing in on her. She wasn't exactly in the socialising mood either. Her social battery was at a low point, with no charging port available to her. She barely had the energy to speak with other guys who tried flirting with her. It made her feel sick; the thought of trying to replace Cedric with one-night flings or casual flirting.
But she knew how much Olivia desperately wanted to go and she didn't want to disappoint her best friend. She wanted to go to a party since the start of their Fourth-Year, when they overheard the Sixth-Year Prefects talking about one. It was something that she spoke about numerous times, with glimmering excitement in her eyes. Emerson could not be selfish, because she knew that Olivia would never go and leave her behind, even if that meant sacrificing her time spent with George. So, when Olivia asked her if they could go together with bright eyes, Emerson reluctantly agreed. She didn't want to depress her best friend with the same feelings of hers. Olivia deserved a good night with the guy that she liked, in the same way that she supported Emerson when she liked Cedric.
The party was at the end of their second week of schooling on the Saturday night. The Hufflepuffs were hosting it in their Common Room, which was located by the kitchens in the basement of the castle. The party was fitted with silencing charms, so the teachers could never hear the loud music and catch them. The dormitories for the younger students were fitted with age lines, so they couldn't try and sneak into the parties. Over the years, they had clearly mastered and perfected the art across the houses. As long as all of the students who were attending the party were careful, the party life could continue, completely undetected.
