A few nights later, with the relief of Emma's benign diagnosis still fresh but the stress lingering, Austin found himself haunted by old memories. He hadn’t spoken much about his mother’s final days, but the fear they’d just experienced had stirred up feelings he thought he’d buried long ago.

That night, Austin fell into a restless sleep. His dreams took him back to the hospital room where his mother lay, frail and tired but still fighting. He saw himself as a younger man, holding her hand, trying to be strong for her, but inside, he was terrified.

In the dream, his mother’s breathing became labored. The beeping of the machines grew erratic, and the room was filled with the cold, sterile smell of antiseptic. Nurses rushed in, and Austin was pushed back, unable to help, unable to say goodbye.

He watched in horror as the light in his mother’s eyes slowly faded, and a gut-wrenching sense of helplessness washed over him. The sound of the flatline echoed in his ears, and he felt himself falling into a dark abyss.

Austin jolted awake, drenched in sweat and trembling uncontrollably. He couldn’t catch his breath, and his heart pounded wildly in his chest. For a moment, he was back in that hospital room, reliving the worst night of his life.

Emma, sensing his distress, woke up and turned on the bedside lamp. She saw the panic in his eyes and immediately took him in her arms. “Austin, it’s okay. You’re safe. It was just a dream,” she whispered, her voice soothing and calm.

But Austin couldn’t speak. He clung to Emma, his body shaking with the force of his emotions. He felt like he was drowning in sorrow and fear, unable to surface.

Emma stroked his back and whispered comforting words, holding him until the shaking subsided. “Breathe, love. Just breathe. I’m here. I’ve got you.”

Finally, Austin found his voice, though it was hoarse and shaky. “I... I dreamed about Mom. The night she died. It felt so real, Emma. I couldn’t save her. I couldn’t even say goodbye.”

Tears welled up in Emma’s eyes as she held him tighter. “I’m so sorry, Austin. I can’t imagine how hard that was for you. But you don’t have to go through this alone. We’ll face these memories together.”

Austin nodded, taking deep breaths to steady himself. “Thank you, Emma. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

She kissed his forehead gently. “You’ll never have to find out. I’m here for you, always.”

As the night slowly turned to dawn, Austin felt a bit of the weight lift off his shoulders. He knew that the scars of the past would never fully heal, but with Emma by his side, he could face whatever came his way.
