The morning sun streamed through the thin curtains of their apartment, casting a soft, golden glow over the small living room. Atsushi sat on the edge of the couch, his hands clasped together, the knuckles white from the pressure. Across from him, Dazai leaned against the kitchen counter, his arms folded, his eyes fixed on the floor. The air between them was thick with unspoken words, a silence that had been building up for weeks, maybe even months.
"Dazai," Atsushi finally said, his voice barely above a whisper. "We need to talk."
Dazai looked up, his eyes meeting Atsushi's. There was a mixture of sadness and resignation in his gaze, as if he had been dreading this moment but knew it was inevitable. "Yeah, I know," he replied, his voice low and steady.
Atsushi took a deep breath, trying to steady his racing heart. "I think... I think we both know that this is not working anymore."
Dazai nodded slowly. "You are right. It's not." He pushed himself off the counter and walked over to the couch, sitting down next to Atsushi. The distance between them felt like ocean, even though they were only inches apart.
Atsushi looked down at his hands, the silence stretching out again. "I have been thinking a lot about us, about everything," he said softly. "And I realized something... I'm in love with someone else."
Dazai's eyes widened slightly, but he didn't seem surprised. "Who?" He asked, his voice gentle.
"Akutagawa," Atsushi confessed, feeling a weight lift off his shoulders as he spoke the name. "I have been trying to ignore it, to pretend that it wasn't there, but I can't anymore."
Dazai sighed, running a hand through his messy brown hair. "I know how you feel," he said quietly. "I'm in love with someone else too."
Atsushi looked up, meeting Dazai's gaze. "Chuuya?"
Dazai nodded. "Yeah, Chuuya."
They sat in silence for a moment, the truth hanging between them. It was a relief to finally say it out loud, but it didn't make the situation any less painful. Atsushi reached out, taking Dazai's hand in his. "I don't regret our time together," he said earnestly. "You were there for me when I needed someone the most, and I will always be grateful for that."
Dazai squeezed his hand gently. "Me too, Atsushi. Me too."

They sat there for a while, holding hands, not needing to say anything more. The decision had been made, and there was no going back. Eventually, Atsushi stood up, letting go of Dazai's hand. "I think I should start packing," he said softly.
Dazai nodded, watching as Atsushi walked to their bedroom. He followed a few moments later, leaning against the doorframe as Atsushi pulled a suitcase out from under the bed. "Do you need any help?" He offered.
Atsushi shook his head. "No, I think I can manage. But... Thank you."
Dazai watched as Atsushi started folding clothes, placing them carefully into the suitcase. It felt surreal, like he was watching a scene from a movie rather than his own life. "Do you think we will still be friends?" He asked quietly.
Atsushi paused, looking up at Dazai. "I hope so," he said sincerely. "I really do."
Dazai smiled faintly. "Me too."

They spent the rest of the morning packing up Atsushi's things, working together in a companionable silence. It was strange, how easy it was to fall back into their old routines even as they were tearing their lives apart. When the last of Atsushi's belongings were packed, they stood in the living room, looking at the two suitcases by the door.
"I guess this is it," Atsushi said, his voice trembling slightly.
Dazai stepped forward, pulling him into a tight hug. "Goodbye, Atsushi," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Take care of yourself."
"You too," Atsushi replied, hugging him back just as tightly. "Goodbye, Dazai."
They pulled apart slowly, lingering for a moment before Atsushi picked up his suitcases and walked out the door. Dazai watched him go, the sound of the door closing behind him echoing in the now empty apartment. He stood there for a long time, staring at the door, feeling a mixture of relief and sadness wash over him.

The day passed in a blur for both of them. Atsushi found a small hotel to stay in for the night, planning to look for a more permanent place the next day. He spent the afternoon unpacking and trying to distract himself with books and television, but his mind kept drifting back to the apartment he had shared with Dazai.
Dazai, on the other hand, spent the day wandering around the city, trying to clear his head. He found himself at a small café they used to visit together, ordering a cup of coffee and sitting at their usual table. He stared out the window, watching the people pass by, feeling a strange sense of detachment.
As the sun began to set, Atsushi found himself walking through the park near their old apartment. He sat down on a bench, watching the sky turn shades of pink and orange. He thought about Akutagawa, wondering what he was doing at that moment. The thought brought a small smile to his face, even as a tear slipped down his cheek.
Dazai, meanwhile, returned to the apartment, the emptiness of it hitting him like a physical blow. He walked into the bedroom, lying down on the bed they used to share, staring up at the ceiling. He thought of Chuuya, the way his eyes sparkled when he laughed, the way his presence made everything feel brighter. The thought brought a sense of hope, even as the sadness lingered.
That night, Atsushi and Dazai both lay in their respective beds, thinking about the day, about the past, and about the future. They both knew that this was the right decision, that they needed to follow their hearts, even if it meant letting go of each other. It was a painful realization, but also a freeing one.
As Atsushi drifted off to sleep, he whispered a quiet goodnight to Dazai, knowing that somewhere, he was doing the same. And even though they were apart, they both felt a sense of peace, knowing that they were on the path to finding true happiness, even if it wasn't with each other.
