"Nobody calls me Maxine. It's Max."

THE NEXT DAY:

Arlo and I hopped on our bikes and pedaled to school. As we strolled down the hallway, we spotted Will engrossed in a piece of paper. I nudged Arlo, "Hey, there's Will!" We quickened our pace and reached him just as he was glancing nervously at a paper.

"Hey, Will! What's going on?" I called out, noticing his uneasy demeanor.

Will attempted to hide the paper behind his back, but Arlo, always quick on his feet, swiped it from his grasp.

"What's this you're trying to hide?" Arlo questioned, unfolding the paper.

As the headline "Zombie Boy" and a photo of Will stared back at us from the newspaper, Arlo and I exchanged concerned glances.

"What on earth is this?" Arlo exclaimed.

Concerned, I took the paper from Arlo, tore it into pieces, and tossed it into a nearby bin. "Forget about it, Will. Some people have too much time on their hands."

"We can't let this ruin your day, Will," I said, putting a reassuring hand on Will's shoulder.

Will, visibly relieved, managed a weak smile. "Thanks, guys."

"No problem, Will. Friends stick together," Arlo chimed in, and we continued down the hallway.

The bell rang, and We went to class, met Dustin, Lucas, and Mike, and sat down for the day's lessons.

* * *

Mr. Clarke placed a model of a brain in front of us, and only my friends and I were paying attention. "Meet the human brain. I know. It doesn't look like much. A little gross, right? But consider this. There are a hundred billion cells inside this miracle of evolution. All working as one. No, I did not misspeak. I did not stutter. A hundred billion."

Just as Mr. Clarke spoke, the door opened, and the principal walked in with a young redhead girl. "Ah, this must be our next student!" Mr. Clarke smiled.

"Indeed it is. All yours," the principal said, leaving the room.

The redhead started heading to a seat at the back of the class before Mr. Clarke stopped her. "Alright, hold up. You don't get away that easy." The girl sighed and came back to the front of the class. "Dustin, drum roll." Mr. Clarke ordered to Dustin. Dustin flipped over his book and started tapping it, making a drum noise. "Class, please welcome, all the way from sunny California, the latest passenger to join us on our curiosity voyage." Mr. Clarke paused for effect. "Maxine!"

"It's Max," the girl interrupted. We six of us exchanged the glance thinking the same.

"I'm sorry?" Mr. Clarke said, confused.
