"New kids, huh?"
Y/N POV:
I sat on my bed, a vintage rotary phone pressed to my ear. On the other end of the line is Steve.
Smiling, I said, "So, Steve, senior year, huh? Excited?"
Steve sighs over the phone. "Not really, Y/N. I'm just not into the whole 'future planning' thing. My dad wants me to follow in his footsteps, work in the family business, but it's not my jam."
I encouraged him, "Come on, Steve, it's your senior year! You should enjoy it. You've got your whole life to figure out the adult stuff."
Wistfully, Steve replied, "Yeah, I guess. It's just... I want something more, you know?"
Supportively, I told him, "I get it, Steve. You deserve more. Hey, no matter what, I'll always be here for you. We've been through everything together since we were five."
With a smile in his voice, Steve says, "You're right, Y/N. You've always had my back. Thanks."
Teasingly, I add, "And remember, I'll be your personal cheerleader, cheering you on even when you're not sure where you're headed."
Chuckling, Steve responds, "You're the best, Y/N. Always there with the pep talks."
Grinning, I conclude, "That's what best friends are for, right? Now, enough about your future crisis..."
Suddenly, Steve interrupts, "I want to ask you about something."
"Sure, Steve. What's on your mind?" I respond, curiosity piqued.
"it's about Nancy," Steve said, making me drop my smile. No, no, no. I should smile because I've moved on.
"What about her?" I asked him.
"I think," Steve dragged, "I think-"
"What happened, Steve?" I asked as I heard him take a deep breath.
"I think we are distancing," Steve said. "I think we are changing."
"What do you mean, Steve? Distancing and changing how?" I asked.
There was a moment of silence, and then Steve continued, "I don't know, Y/N. It's just that lately, things feel different. We're both falling out of love."
"What?" I asked in shock because Nancy never said anything, nor did I notice anything wrong between them.
"Nowadays, we both are arguing," Steve said.
"Hey, Steve, you're not falling out of love. You're just frustrated about this senior year," I said to him.
"No, Y/N, it's not senior year frustration. I think -" Steve paused.
