The year was 1966. The sun was starting to descend over the state of Oklahoma. It was short-lived, like always, but beautiful nonetheless and filled with fiery colors. The scarlet tones blended in with the yellow, creating a mesmerizing scene.

On top of Jay Mountain lay the charred remains of an old church. The burnt roof was on the floor, the walls were missing, and everything was burned black. Nobody really went near it after the fire.

Today was an exception. A boy no older than 15 walked up to the top of Jay Mountain and sat on what used to be the front steps of the church. His hair was bleached blond with long reddish-brown roots, his eyes were a greyish-green, and his name was Ponyboy Michael Curtis.

He had brought a book with him. One that meant a lot to him. Not just because it was a book he liked, or had always wanted, but because it reminded him of someone. Someone no longer there.

As the sun slowly went under the horizon, he cracked open the book and read out loud.

"Scarlett O'Hara was not beautiful, but men seldom realized it when caught by her charm as the Tarleton twins were." He kept reading aloud, speaking page after page, even though there was nobody around to listen to him.

When the sun dipped too far down into the horizon to illuminate the pages of Gone With the Wind, Ponyboy put a bookmark in it and closed it up. He turned around and looked at the charred remains of that old, dusty church. As he wiped a tear from his eye, he spoke with a cracking voice.

"Stay gold, Johnny Cade. I'll be back tomorrow." And after saying those words, he left Jay Mountain with a heart full of grief.
