Darry, Sodapop, and Ponyboy were all in their Ford, parked in front of the local juvenile detention center. They were waiting for Dally to come out since his most recent sentence had ended.

Eventually Darry spotted the familiar blond-haired delinquent walking out like he owned the place. Ponyboy scooted over and opened the other backseat door before getting back on the right side.

"Hey," Dally said while closing the door behind him. He crossed his arms after buckling his seatbelt. Darry sighed then started up the car. Sodapop, who was sitting shotgun, turned around.

"Hey, Dally. How was jail?"

"Eh, usual. Boring." Dally and Soda chatted away for the entire ride. Darry was too focused on driving to talk, and Ponyboy was just looking out the window. Eventually, Darry parked in his driveway.

"All right, everyone out." Darry shut the engine off then got out of the car. Everyone else followed, with Ponyboy being the last one to leave.

"Hey, where's the other guys?" Dally asked while lighting a cigarette.

"Over by the lot," Ponyboy responded while pointing, "Everyone's there."

"Well why're we waiting here, then?" Dally flicked the back of Ponyboy's head then started to walk over to the lot. Darry followed behind him to make sure he wouldn't get arrested again, and Sodapop dragged Ponyboy along towards the lot.

Eventually, they all got there. Two-Bit, Steve, and Johnny were waiting there. Dally greeted all of them; Steve with a handshake, Two-Bit with a pat on the shoulder, and Johnny with a headlock. Once that was done, Two-Bit dragged something out of a bush.

"Look what I found," he said while dragging a crate of fireworks out. Everyone looked excited.

"Damn, fireworks?"

"How'd you get them?"

"Wow."

Two-Bit clicked his tongue then grabbed a lighter.

"Who wants to start 'em?"

Dally stood up, but Darry shoved him back into a sitting position.

"No. You're going to start a wildfire."

"Eh, fair." Dally shrugged then let Darry start the fireworks because he wouldn't nuke a forest with them. Everyone found places to sit/lie while Darry was figuring out the fireworks. Soda and Steve sat on a big rock, Two-bit just on the grass, and Dally, Johnny, and Ponyboy lay on the ground.

Darry finally got the fireworks working. He leaned on a tree and looked up as they started to go off.

Johnny had to cover his ears due to the noise, but his eyes were wide as he watched the first explosive burst into a blue firework. Ponyboy had seen fireworks before, but never this close-up. His eyes were almost as wide as Johnny's.

Dally tried to look neutral and unimpressed to maintain his "tuffness", but deep inside he was enchanted by the fireworks. He never got time to look at them since he was either in jail or asleep at someone's house.

Sodapop was watching with a dorky smile on his face. The fireworks flashed different colors of light on him. Steve wasn't paying attention since he was trying to locate the chocolate cake that was in the picnic basket to the left of him.

Two-Bit lit a cigarette and took out his switchblade. He watched the fireworks on the reflection of the silver blade. It was cool.

Darry was glancing in between the sky and the firework crate to make sure nothing went wrong. He was glad it was himself that set them off instead of Dally, because he would've exploded the entire thing or something. That kid is gonna get himself killed, he thought to himself while looking at the sky.

Eventually, the last firework went off. It was red in color and big in size.

"You picked a good batch, Two-Bit," Ponyboy said while getting up and helping Johnny and Dally on their feet.

"I know." He smirked and put his switch away. "But it's gettin' late, and we got school tomorrow. Well, most of us."

Sodapop looked around and noticed everyone was looking at him.

"Oh, screw off." He playfully flipped off everyone and got up. "At least I get paid."

Darry sighed then dragged his brothers to the Ford.

"See you guys tomorrow." Everyone waved goodbye as they drove off. Two-Bit walked home, Steve went in the opposite direction, and Dally dragged Johnny to Buck Merril's house to stay the night.
