Vee awakens to brightest black.
She's floating in a pool of warm darkness, a vague golden glow warming her from above. She feels... safe, happy, at peace... but where is everyone?
She dimly registers a golden edged shape, some kind of dark cube holding a pale green light, hovering towards her face. It flashes and she closes her eyes tightly.
"Hey there sleepyhorns."
Vee blinks, "Luz?"
There's only darkness.
"Amity?"
Another cube approaches, flashes. "I told you, we'll do it together!"
She blinks frantically in the dark.
"Mami?"
Another cube. "I mean it's a very nice sludge hand! And oh look it's smiling at me, isn't that nice!"
"I'm," Vee sobs, "I'm so sorry mami! I didn't want to hurt her!"
"Please mija! Please I'm begging you to take me with you!"
"Mami?!"
"I love you both so much! Protect her for me, okay?"
"A-amity?!"
"but ... I still don't know what to say...."
"Luz?!"
Vee covers her ears, so many voices all rushing around her all at once!
"Well well, if it isn't the riff raff come to pillage the family estate - how very quant."
"I loved you Amity! And you broke my heart, all so you could be with THEM?!"
"SUCH A GOOD! LITTLE! BASILISK!"
And then it all fades, leaving just one last voice, deep as sin and full of malice, as it whispers:
"Would you like to see a magic trick?"
Vee flinches back, or tries to, stopped by the soft grass behind her back. She opens her eyes, blinking up at a violet pink sky, feeling and seeing the thick grey cloak covering her body, her head nestled in the soft warmth of someone's lap. She looks up to see Luz peer into her view, smiling. The green liquid is gone, revealing the pink scar that had previously split just her eyebrow, now reaching down over her eye. But her hazel eyes are bright as ever, her smile as wonderful as that day with the dress so long ago! And now Luz's smile is all for her, as she strokes Vee's fringe out of her face, gently soothing:
"Hey there sleepyhorns."
Vee blinks. "What, what did you just say?"
To be continued.
