Dev's POV
I looked at my phone, after blinking my eyes to adjust to the flash of the phone screen. I looked at it and saw a text. I smiled, guess someone can't sleep.
Night owl, cute.
I cracked my fingers and lifted myself on my elbows, and looked at the screen. Unlocking the phone, I clicked on the flash notification, then the message opened. It was not from Vani, it was from another person, just number. I frowned my eyebrows seeing it, and was confused.
Who texted at this time of night? Do people really don't sleep at this time? Am I such an oldie that I can't stay awake late at night?
Unknown: Dev, is this you?
I scratched my head, and looked at it for a few more seconds. Probably hoping the number will reveal some more hints for me, but it didn't. Who's number it was, I don't know. Because I was using my same number since college, it was that same old Jio sim card. I didn't change it, neither did change the registration number from Papa's name to mine. I was under 18 when I bought the sim, so yeah.
I decided to reply to the text, anyways whoever texted me seems to probably know my number. Otherwise, it's a really low chance of guessing someone's name and number at the same time, and coincidentally all matching, doesn't sound a coincidence.
I've had very less coincidences as well, so I don't believe in them much either. Everything is planned, by us, or by the God. None is coincidence for sure. That's what my belief says.
I made the keyboard pop up, and dragged my finger across the screen, texting back.
D: Yes, who is this?
The unknown started typing back almost immediately. Seems like the someone who had texted me, was just sitting next to their phone, waiting for my reply. But the text took long enough to reach. They sent me a paragraph, whoever it was.
I don't like long texts much, I prefer them broken into small ones better.
The only long texts sent were by my ex, also in the earlier stage of our relationship. Because after the ups were gone, there were only tears and silence. The sound of only shouting and beating, throwing things at me..
Unknown: I am sorry. I didn't wanna text you all out of the blue. But I was waiting to text you at night. This is the first time in a long time when I saw you online this late. I hope I'm not distrubing you, I just wanted to know how long it has been since we spoke to each other. I hope you are doing well, and fine. Don't worry about how I found your number. Seems like you didn't change your number either, still a cheapskate are you?
I frowned my eyebrows after reading it all, making me confused even more and more. I squinted my eyes, and looked at the clock. The room was dark, and I couldn't see it, so I decided to turn on the light. When I flicked the switch on, and the light invaded my peaceful dark space, I remembered again that my phone also shows time too. I checked the phone and it was just past 2 am, but in the clock, it was about 3 am. I sighed, again I have to change the battery.
It was not like I was cheapskate, but I was lazy. I didn't like to move much except for my work and stuff. I wonder how I didn't fluff up to be a fat guy, but stayed a normal person. Maybe because of my work being in the fields most of the time. Mountains, rivers, forests, aah.. all my natural home.
Another few pings invaded my silence, and I checked. It was text from the same number again.
Unknown: Are you there Dev? Are you asleep? Do you wanna reply?
Unknown: Are you awake Dev?
Unknown: Are you busy Dev? Should I text later?
Unknown: Are you even there Devraj?
Whoever was texting me, they seemed to be finally getting over their nice personality. Because they just used my complete name when I delayed my replies. They were upset, and I for sure did not know why.
I started typing again, and pressed the send button, deciding to know who this person was.
D: Who are you? And I'm not asleep yet don't worry.
About three minutes later, I forgot what was in my memory anymore. Because I fell asleep while sitting, waiting for the reply. When I opened eyes again, there came their reply. Seems like they also feel tired sometimes to not reply immediately.
It was a lot of replies, and Vani had also replied. But I decided to see the replies of the unknown number first. Because I didn't want someone else to bother me while I talked to Vani. But I wanted to see the texts also, so I opened the chain of texts.
Unknown: I can't tell you yet who I am, but please talk to me a bit? Sometimes? I am not asking you to always talk but, please some times?
Unknown: I don't know why I am texting you after so many years now. But, I thought I'd make sure I would talk to you, and know how you are.
Unknown: I am really really willing to know how your life is now, and hopeful about it being the most beautiful. I know you deserve the most beautiful life. And I for sure pray everyday that you get all the happiness in the world, never in the world you have any sadness at all.
( Several minutes later ) Unknown: Are you awake Dev?
( Several more minutes later ) Unknown: I'm sorry for being clingy after so many years, suddenly texting. I promise I'll text you later again, I'm not leaving you this time. So, until we talk again. Goodnight Devraj.
There were no more texts from that number.
V: I know I said I'll sleep. But guess what? XD
V: I guess you stayed true to your promise, slept already -_-
V: Devvvvv!! Where are you? Did you really fall asleep??
I started dragging my fingers again.
D: I just got awake, from pings.
V: OMG.. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you up. You have work tomorrow too, I'm sorry. You can go sleep, I won't disturb you.
I smiled to myself and texted again.
D: Not you. It was text from another unknown number. Don't know who it is so I cut off them sooner than normal.
V: Who was it, do you know?
D: No idea, but they have my number. Confusing isn't it?
V: Yeah it is!
Several silent moments passed, and another yawn escaped my mouth. So I texted her about sleeping.
D: Vani, I'm sorry but I really feel sleepy now :(
V: Arre it's fine, sleep now. I'm not gonna text tonight anymore. Sleep well :)
I smiled and put the phone down, not before sending the last goodnight. There were no more texts for another few minutes, so I counted sheeps again, this time some more sheeps crossed the fence.
I slowly drifted off to sleep when I don't know. But before drifting off, my brain was now occupied with the confusion, who's number was that?
