Hamza
It's been a long while since I met up with the guys so I decided to do just that.
I called both Nasir and Mahmud and we decided to meet at Mahmud's.
I knocked on the locked door of Mahmud's part of the house.
"Yo bro!" I greeted Nasir once he opened the door."Boss! Even your shadow I no dey see." He gave me a brief hug before giving me space to go inside.
"Meye sa kake magana kaman baka sanshi ba? What he does best is disappearing when the relationship is young." Mahmud knows me so well.
Sometimes I truly forget I have friends when I get a new girl that gives me the right vibes.
"You got a new babe?" Nasir pushed me down to sit on the couch and he towered over me.
"Yeah well...but I think it's over," I answered with a sigh. Hafsat can be so complicated.
"You think?" That was Mahmud. He was on the centre table facing the televison; playing fifa of course.
Now he had paused it and turned to me completely. He gets the gist, now he's gonna make me spill."What's going on?" Nasir, always having gaps on the conversations we have.
"You always end the relationship bro. Who is the girl?"
"Wallahi guy, I got carried away. There's nothing between us."
Mahmud laughed hard while rolling on the floor. The rest of my time there was a nightmare; they mocked me back to back.
After Maghrib prayers, I bid them farewell. Unlike me, my friends take prayers more seriously so for the first time in a while, I prayed. I can't put a name to the feeling that washed over me when I was in sujood.
My heart was yearning to see someone and I couldn't seem to get a grip so I drove there without thinking twice.
Her mom might think I'm insane and might prevent me from seeing her but I don't care.
I was acting with the minimum courage I could muster. Here was I in front of their gate, my hands in a fist. All I have to do is knock.
I almost turned around but then, I remembered how I've spent a week without setting my eyes on her.I knocked and waited. Unlocking of door, footsteps, unlocking of the gate, her. Hafsat was there in flesh.
Why does it feel like I haven't seen her in years?
How much effect does this girl have on me?
I don't know what came over me but I found myself moving closer to hug her.
She moved back quickly wide eyed.I noticed something though,
"Hey, are you okay?"
She lost some weight and looked darker."What.are.you.doing.here?"
The spite in her voice. It hurts.I need to come up with something or she's gonna shut this gate on my face.
"Um, Ameera sent you something," I gestured for her to follow me to the car which was packed few feet away.
Hafsat narrowed her eyes in suspicion while I held back a smile. Hafsat kenan. I've missed her so much.
I opened the backseat and pointed at nothing in particular. The lighting was dull so you can't really see the inside of the car clearly.
She moved closer and peeped into the car. I used that opportunity to trap her there.
When she turned around, I was too close so she opted to sit instead of pushing me back.
"Hamza," she gritted in annoyance.
With a sigh, I squatted, facing her directly.
I was about to take her hands in mine but she hastily hid them behind her back.So many reasons to like this girl. She doesn't even let me touch her.
"Hafsat, fada min laifi na," I pleaded, looking into her eyes.
"Ohhh baka ma sani ba?"
"I swear I don't "
"You called another girl baby."
Now I'm more confused, "And?"
"In my presence, Hamza."
If I was confused before I don't even know what I am now.
"You don't like it?" I asked, careful not to make her angry the more."Of course I don't. It made me jealous and angry sosai." Her nose flared in anger and she had her arms crossed.
"Okay, I'm sorry kinji? Am I forgiven?"
Hafsat gave me a playful glare before nodding. I let out a sigh of relief before standing to my full height. My legs were cramped but it's worth it.
She stands up too and closed the door.
"I need to go," she said looking towards the gate.
"Wallahi Hafsat the previous week was ugly without you. Please give me a chance."
Hamza what are you doing??!
The voice in my head scolded but I was far too gone."What chance?" I could hear the confusion in her voice, and I could see it in her eyes.
"I want us to be more than this. Will you be mine?"
"Hamzaa?!" She screamed looking sideways as if someone could hear us.
"Please?"
"I don't know Hamza. I would think about it."
I expected her to say yes immediately but who was I kidding? Maybe it's all in my head and she doesn't like me?
Dismissing the topic, I asked about her health and she said she has been battling malaria.
I prayed for her to get better and she hurried inside.
It's gonna be a long night today.
