The Girl Across the Street
✰
There once lived an old couple in the house across the street from Alex's home. It was a two story house that looked old, yet it was a pretty home. Paint was chipping off the side of the house and the windows were tinted yellow from the lack of cleaning. The owners couldn't do much because of their age and hired people to clean the house from time to time, but stopped because they were old and couldn't afford to lose much money.
Sure their relatives came by, but not so often. Alex would stare at the house every morning and everytime he walked past it to get to school. No offense, but at the age the couple was, someone would have to buy the house. He wondered, when the owners do leave, would the new family remodel the home? Would there be annoying kids running in the grass and destroying the flowers the old lady worked so hard to plant? He sure hoped not.
One cloudy morning, he awoke to find a 'for sale' sign in front of the old house. Lives came to an end when he must have been asleep. Now the only thing he sees is an empty house that gets visited by new families who are planning on moving.
The flowers started to die and he took it upon himself to water the flowers each day and check up on the soil. He made sure the lawn was well cared for and got rid of any spider webs around the house. His mother was very grateful for his kind actions and helped out from time to time with the old house.
At the end of every day, he would sit at his desk and practice rhythms on his guitar while mindlessly staring at the house on the other side of the road. Maybe if a new family moves in he can have a new friend to play music with or even go walk to school with. He'll have to wait for that day to come though.

There was no longer a sign in front of the house. His mom told him that someone had bought the home and they would be moving in shortly. This only made Alex care for the grass and plants even more. He wanted to make sure it looked well kept for the new owners moving in. They would appreciate the thought.
He waited every day and night to see this family, he hoped it was a family, enter the house and possibly even react to the well kept yard. He hoped that soon enough he would see a boy around his age stroll through the streets on a skate board listening to music. He would have a new friend.
He would only wish for the universe to let him have a new friend.

"Alex, come here!" His mom called from the kitchen.
He set his guitar down gently on the floor and lazily made his way to her. "What happened?"
"The new owners, they moved in!" She pulled the curtain to the side for him to see. "I barely saw their car right now! Maybe they moved in during the night."
He became more interested and leaned closer to the window, "I missed their arrival..."
"Now don't be sad," she patted his back, "You can greet them when you see 'em!"
"But who knows when that might be. They're gonna be busy because they just moved in and I don't want to bother them."
"Well," his mom sighed, "Just keep an eye out for them."

Mornings would come and Alex would spend all day watching out of window. Waiting for a sign to tell him there was a family inside. On school days, he would look back as he walked along the sidewalk hoping someone would come through the door and take the same route he did to get to school. All he wanted was a new friend to add to his group, was that so hard to ask for?
