Tristeza

"Don't worry, I'll be back in a few!" Alex semi-yelled to his friends as he walked out of the packed party house. He sighed and rubbed his neck in tiredness. In all honesty, he didn't want to be there, but it was one of his close friends birthday. He wasn't going to say no to that, but spending his time inside was draining his social battery.

He sat down on the concrete steps and brought out a cigarette and a lighter. He contemplated for a bit as he took a drag and looked up to the night sky to find a full moon.

You would have loved the view.

Unfortunately, you were no longer with him. It was his fault for that. He thought that it would be easy to be away from you, but he was wrong. He ended the relationship with you because he thought it would be better for the both of you. You were too understanding and agreed with him. That's the thing he hated about you; how understanding you were. Couldn't you see he didn't want to see you go?

It didn't seem to favor him. Now because of it, he has to watch you from afar and watch as the other men flirt with you. By all means, you and him were still good friends. There was just a boundary. A boundary he wouldn't dare cross. He put this to himself so he had to watch your life go by as he stood on the side lines. Now every night, he takes a deep dive into his mind of what could have been if he didn't let you go.

He hopes that in a different universe, you and him would still be together; living the life you two wanted. And if he was still was stupid to let you go, he would rather hope he wouldn't have met you. It would be easier on himself to know that he doesn't have to go through the pain of watching you drift away and have your life with another man.

The ashes of his cigarette flowed with the wind. He inhaled the scent of the smoke, yet paused when he caught a whiff of your perfume that you loved to wear. How funny... you weren't even around. Not in the party, not in the city, not in the country. He connected the scent of cherry wine to his moments when he was with you. The smell now holds bittersweet memories that were once euphoric.

He extinguished the stick under his foot and brought himself to stand up. Once again, he looked at the bright circular object in the sky and thought of you one last time before entering the party. He shook off any unwanted thoughts of you, but he couldn't help himself to keep you in the back of his mind.
