It was late on a Sunday morning in the sleepy village of Willow's Brook. The church bells indicated the end of the service and the early summer sun promised a glorious day with not a cloud in sight.
Kan was gathering his things in the small hut which they used as a football club house, he would get a shower at home. He enjoyed playing football at the weekend just for fun after a week of helping his mum, Sheila run their family cottage bed & breakfast.
Kan's dad, Professor Sucharit Thiwat lectured in engineering at a nearby college.
Kan himself had majored in business, economics and accounting and one day hoped to continue to expand their business. He dealt with all the admin' and accounts while mum focused on keeping the guest's happy with comfortable, clean rooms and home cooked breakfast's and even though it was a bed & breakfast there was always dinner available if a guest requested it for an extra fee of course.
It was good to have a kick about with the lad's he had grown up with especially his best friend Pat' who's nickname was Champ not only because he was the best at scoring goals but also he was the best at scoring with the ladies too.
"Kan, we're all going for a quick pint, are you in mate?" Champ shouted.
"not today Champ, I've got to help mum, we're having a barbecue tonight seeing as the weather's nice an' all, the guest's will enjoy it and you know you're welcome to come?" Kan replied.
"count me in, you know I love your mum and your dad literally cracks me up, do you remember when he was telling us about the first time he ever tried Yorkshire pudding, your mum was creased up laughing" Champ continued.
"yeah, we love dad's thai cooking throughout the week but mum does insist on a traditional roast every Sunday, you can't beat mums roast potatoes" Kan said while his mouth watered thinking about them.
"yeah man, she's the best"
"when are you going to see your nan and grandad again?" Champ asked.
"in a few weeks time, I've got to admit I'm looking forward to the change of scenery ... ok mate I'm off, I stink! I think I must have rolled in some dog poo or something? I'll see you later" Kan said.
"see you later" Champ said as he dashed across the field to the other side where there was a shortcut to the local pub.
By now the church bells had stopped ringing, the chimes had been replaced by birdsong and the sound of a distant lawnmower and Kan slung his bag over his shoulder then after walking through, he turned to latch the gate of the football field.
It was while he was latching the gate that he heard the sound of car tyres on gravel and when he looked over his shoulder he saw an ostentatious black car with tinted windows which slowly drew up beside him and the drivers window lowered to reveal a young man in a dark suit.
"are you ok mate?, you seem a bit lost?" Kan said.
"er' yes actually, I am a bit lost, I'm looking for the XXXX Conference Centre, I seem to have taken a wrong turning somewhere?" the driver supplied.
"I'd say, right just a sec' ... let me think" Kan said as he casually leaned in closer to the driver whilst trying to think of the best route.
"so I can tell you the quick way but you'd have to double back and get on the motorway, the scenic route will take longer obviously ..."
but before Kan could continue he noticed long fingers, a veiny hand and forearm and a rolled up white sleeve slowly reaching across from the back to tap the driver on the shoulder then Kan heard a deep voice speaking in Thai.
"let's just go Lon, does this idiot even know where the place is, I mean look at him covered in dirt and for heaven's sake close the window, he stinks!"
"hey!"Kan began,
"thankyou sir, we're in a bit of a hurry so I'll have to go" the driver called Lon spoke.
Before Kan had a chance to reply, the automatic window slid up and the car continued to crawl down the lane.
What a fucking asshole, Kan thought to himself, I hope you stay lost you jerk and sighing he started trudging home in his muddy football boots.
Approaching the back of his home Kan climbed over the stile, walked past the rental cottages and through the gardens then slipped in through the back door after removing his boots and leaving them in the porch.
After walking in to the kitchen he called out, "I'm back mum"
"hey son, did you have a good practice?" she enquired.
"yeah, it was ok, I invited Champ later"
"that kid" Kan's mum laughed "your dad love's to wind him up"
"I'm gonna grab a quick shower and then I'm all yours"
"ok son, we've just had an overnight check in so I need you to take a basket over to cottage #3"
"ok, gimme five minutes mum" Kan said whilst leaning in to kiss his mum on the cheek.
After freshening up and dressing in jeans and a pale blue tee shirt Kan presented for duty doing a mock salute which earned him a playful clip round the ear.
"don't get too cocky lad, we can always send you to live in Thailand and you'll have to do two years military service for real" Kan's mum said.
"ok, sheesh mum" Kan said laughing as he asked where the welcome basket was?
"it's over by the door and there are some fresh towels as well that the guest requested, oh and can you make sure there is a good stock of teabags, coffee, sugar and creamer sachets?"
"will do mum" and with another mock salute he ran out of the door with the supplies laughing as his mother threw a dish towel after him.
Kan retraced his steps towards the rental cottages and walked towards cottage #3 then after knocking on the door he waited but there was no response. Knocking again he decided the guest must have gone out somewhere so using the master key he went inside the room.
Walking to the dresser beside the bed he placed the welcome basket on it, checked the refreshment sachets and turned to leave the towels on the bed and it was at that moment that the door to the bathroom swung open and out walked a tall, muscular guy wearing nothing but a scowl.
"fucking hell" Kan swore in shock looking anywhere but at the guy.
"YOU!" the guy shouted before continuing,
"WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING IN MY ROOM" the guy demanded in broken English.
Kan, trying desperately to keep his eyes above waist level then noticed the guys veiny hands and arms realised it was the asshole from the car earlier and in perfect Thai he responded.
"I've come to bring fresh towels and supplies but if I had known it was a rude jerk like you I wouldn't have bothered" Kan shouted back.
"you speak Thai?"
"dugh!"
"how dare you speak to a paying guest like this?, I will be reporting you to the owner!" the tall guy growled.
"yeah?, good luck with that mate!" Kan replied as he stormed out of the cottage slamming the door behind him.
"asshole!" Kan muttered.
"ignorant little shit!" the guest said to himself.
He was going to have strong words with the owner later on at the barbecue he had been informed of earlier, he was glad he only had to stay one night while Lon worked out where they needed to go for this stupid bloody conference!
