It was about 2.30 in the morning when the cab pulled up outside the bed and breakfast and Kan was so tired he could barely see straight. It felt so weird being back in the UK when only a few hours ago he had been with Kiri, his grandparents and Phak.
The whole cottage was in darkness so he was careful not to wake anyone as he unlocked the door and went inside. He had sent his parents a text to say don't wait up, it wasn't fair on them knowing they had work to do in the morning.
Creeping in, he dumped his luggage and went to get a drink of water then he made his way upstairs and had a quick shower before climbing in to bed. Before he fell asleep he looked at the ring on his finger that was sparkling in the moonlight and wondered how long it would be before the pain went away.
When morning came Kan washed, dressed and went downstairs to see his parents. After much hugging and kissing they all sat down to breakfast and asked him lots of questions about his trip. It wasn't long before there was a knock on the door and Champ entered shouting, "it's only me"
Champ walked Into the kitchen, high fived Kan and gave him a bro hug and said,
"hey Kan, we've missed you so much haven't we Mr and Mrs T" and Kan's mum stood up to pour a cup of tea for Champ.
"thank's Mrs T" he said as she placed the mug in front of him and sat back down again.
"have you had a good time?"
" yes, it's been great, what have you been up to? " Kan asked.
"this and that" Champ winked, otherwise known as, I'll tell you later in private and he continued,
"it's all been happening here mate, about a week after you left someone bought the football field, we're going to have to find somewhere else to have the club now!"
"oh man! " Kan said, "I've been really looking forward to a kick about too"
"yeah, tell me about it, I don't know what they are doing there but the whole field is surrounded by hoarding nine foot high, you can't see what's going on?"
"perhaps the council are building something?" Kan said, " we've been nagging them for a village hall for ages"
"what's the plan then?" Kan asked, turning to his mum?
"well, you must still be tired so you get some more rest and have a think about what you fancy for dinner, dad's cooking tonight to celebrate you being back home" Sheila said.
"well I'm off" Champ said after finishing his tea. "I just wanted to say hi and message me when your free, we'll do something, yeah"
"yeah mate, thanks for coming" Kan said.
Kan went back to his room while unbeknownst to him, his parents looked at each other.
"there's something wrong with him honey, I can't put my finger on it but ... I don't know?" Sheila said to her husband.
"don't worry dear, I'm sure it's just jet lag, he'll be fine when he's had a proper rest" Sucharit replied.
Kiri telephoned Kan later that night just to confirm he had arrived home safely. They chatted about mundane things though Kan was very conscious about the cost of the call and kept telling Kiri to go.
"it's ok baby, it's not like I can't afford it" Kiri said so they chatted a little longer and Kiri promised to get in touch the following day.
Kan was so happy that Kiri had called but they doubts began again after the call ended. This became Kan's daily routine, he would help his mum, talk or text with Kiri at night and then sleep until it all began again. He and Champ still had to find a new place for the football club but other than that life had become stagnant.
