Three day's later, Kiri found himself outside the home of Kan's grandparents once more after Kan had lined him that morning saying that if it was convenient his grandparents would like to invite him to dinner at 6.30pm so Kiri quickly replied and said yes, it was convenient, he had waited expectantly for a reply from Kan but nothing had arrived.
There had been a lot of work to catch up on since returning from the UK but his personal assistant Pang kept nagging him to take some time off.
Pang had been with him for several years, they weren't as close as he and Lon and he knew Pang had a crush on him so he was very careful not to encourage him in any way. Pang was a good assistant and a sweet kid but he would never be more than that.
Lon had jetted off again to Taiwan to take care of some minor issues over there so basically everything was in hand, there was no reason he couldn't relax a little so locking his car, Kiri walked towards the big iron gate and pressed the buzzer and it wasn't long before someone came to open the gate for him, a young, pleasant faced man who introduced himself as Phak as he wai'd respectfully.
"everyone is inside Phi, please come in" Phak motioned for Kiri to walk ahead giving Kiri the impression that he had his feet firmly under the table.
After going inside and wai'ing at the grandparents, Kan's grandmother excused herself to go and check on dinner and his grandfather offered Kiri a drink which he gladly accepted.
His eyes sought out Kan who was smiling at Phak and whispering about something, it was annoying to say the least and why did this Phak guy feel the need to keep touching Kan all the time, placing his arm across his shoulder, patting his thigh or messing with his bangs which kept falling across his eyes.
After engaging with Kan's grandfather for a while Kiri went over to speak to Kan who was sitting beside Phak and they both had their heads together while they looked in an old photo album.
"Have you been enjoying your stay so far Kan?" Kiri enquired and looking up Kan replied,
"yes, we've had a blast haven't we Phak, it's been awesome ... are you happy to be back home Kiri?" Kan asked.
"I'm always happy to be back in Thailand after a business trip yes, it's good to see you ... looking so well" Kiri added on at the end.
Kiri almost regretted coming when forced to witness the obvious camaraderie between Phak and Kan.
If the grandparents plan really was to set them both up, Kiri was fast losing confidence that he had any hopes of winning Kan for himself because anyone seeing them together could that tell they were very fond of one another.
In the beginning when he and Kan had first met he had to admit that he'd felt an attraction and had considered a dalliance but during the time he'd spent with Kan since then albeit short, he had developed a strong desire to make Kan his, not just physically but completely.
He kept thinking about him constantly and it was difficult to get any work done, he couldn't understand why a foul mouthed little brat like Kan was able to have such an effect on his equilibrium.
Kan's grandmother came back into the room and asked Kan and Phak to help serve the dishes. Kiri also offered to help but was told in no uncertain terms that he was the guest.
Soon enough, the table was covered with an array of tempting and aromatic dishes and when everyone was seated, Kan's grandmother heaped up a bowl of rice for Kiri and encouraged him to tuck in.
Wai'ing and thanking his hosts for the meal, Kiri's eyes skated over the mouth watering dishes not knowing where to start. There was phanaeng (steamed crab), pu neung (deep fried fish), pla thod (roast squid), pla meuk yang(fried rice) and a small assortment of soups.
It was a meal fit for royalty and even though Kiri often ate like this in restaurants, the one thing he missed was the family atmosphere. he wondered if Kan knew just how lucky he was and very much doubted he did.
"so Mr Junphanatat" grandfather said,
"please sir, call me Kiri"
"Kiri, are you happy to be back home? I imagine your parents are happy to have their son back home with them" grandfather continued.
"I was not blessed with a family such as yours sir, I am an orphan" Kiri supplied and Kan's head shot up at the other side of the table. Kiri had nothing to hide, it was common knowledge if you googled the top five bachelors in Thailand.
"no wife eagerly awaiting your return then?
"no sir, no one ... yet" Kiri answered while looking back at Kan
"regardless young man, you have done very well for yourself. I am sure if you had family they would be very proud of you, please look on us as your family" grandfather said.
"thank you sir" Kiri wai'd
The meal continued and afterwards coffee was served by Kan after he and Phak had washed the dishes.
"well, thank you for a lovely dinner but I must really be going home now" Phak said.
"can I offer you a lift?" Kiri asked to be polite.
"that's very kind thank you but I only live up the road" he turned to Kan, "don't forget the floating market tomorrow Kan"
"your going to a floating market? I haven't been to one of those in years" Kiri inserted.
"Kan, why don't you take Kiri with you as well" his grandmother suggested.
"perhaps he's busy nan?" Kan said.
"are you busy son? " nan asked Kiri.
"no actually, I have some free time" Kiri supplied.
"there you are Kan, all settled" nan said.
"yes grandmother" Kan answered and looked at Kiri, "we thought we would grab lunch first then go to the markets after. I'll line you the details later"
"I'll look forward to that Kan, thank you" Kiri replied and looked at Phak to see if there was any sign of agitation? oddly enough he had a massive grin on his face, was he so confident in their relationship that he didn't see Kiri as a threat.
After bidding farewell, Kan saw Phak out and Kiri was left nursing his coffee and wondering what the hell was going on outside until Kan returned five minutes later and then it was Kiri's turn to leave.
"don't forget Kiri, you are welcome here anytime" Kan's grandmother said while capturing his hands and holding them between hers.
"thank you grandmother, grandfather and thank you again for the feast"
"you are very welcome son, Kan, would you escort Kiri to his car dear" and Kan nodded and moved to do that and as Kan escorted Kiri to the gate he spoke,
"I'm sorry about what you said before, that you have no one"
"no need to be sorry Kan, it is what it is but thank you" Kiri said, reaching up to ruffle his hair.
"line me when you get home and I'll give you the details for tomorrow but don't you need to go to work?" Kan asked.
"I do but my assistant keeps nagging me about taking some time off so perhaps I might just do that" Kiri answered.
"so, this Phak guy, you two seem quite close?"
"yeah, we've known each other for years" Kan said smiling and Kiri, realising that Kan wasn't going to elaborate decided to call it a day.
"ok, I'd better make a move, please thank your grandparents again Kan for the wonderful meal" and after wai'ing to one another Kiri climbed into his car and drove away.
At the very least he would get to spend time with Kan again tomorrow and he could keep his eye on Phak and their interactions. Women and men literally threw themselves at him every day and yet trying to get Kan to look at him with anything other than indifference was proving to be challenging, luckily Kiri was not one to turn away from any challenge.
