"Maksim?" I said, confused, shock, and scared all at the same time.
My heart raced, thumping against my chest. Was he here to get me? No, no, no. The mere thought sent chills down my spine, my mind racing with fear. What could his unexpected presence mean? Was I safe? What was he doing here? Should I run? The uncertainty gnawed at me, each heartbeat echoing my growing unease.
"What are you doing here." He asked.
What was I doing here?
"I think I'm supposed to ask you that." I said my voice soft, I'd already started to back away at that point.
"Right, I'm sorry. I forgot about the whole you know." He said rubbing his head, "I'm not here to hurt you or anything, I actually got fired, a while ago."
Oh. His words hung in the air, a mix of relief and confusion washing over me. Fired? The unexpected revelation added another layer of complexity to the situation.
Why would he fire Maksim? What did his dismissal mean for me now? The tension in the air thickened, uncertainty clouding my thoughts as I struggled to grasp the implications of his confession.
When I didn't reply he said, "well I was thinking maybe you would want to catch up. If you want at least."
Should I trust him? I mean he didn't do me anything. He was just as confused like I was.
Finally I spoke, "sure, I was going to grab something to eat." I nervously admitted.
He smiled at me.
"Same here," his words echoed mine. It was as if our tastes were intertwined, forging a connection beyond mere conversation. In that moment, the tension melted away, replaced by a shared understanding of our quest for nourishment.
The decision to stroll to the cafe had been spontaneous, a choice that led us to this peculiar coffee and cinnamon bun pairing. We settled into our seats, and I knew I had to ask him.
"Why'd he fire you?" I asked out of curiosity.
"Not sure. The night you left he called me and said I was fired. It was so random. I thought maybe he was joking or something, but he never jokes."
He's right it is random.
"I actually just ended up getting another job anyway, but came to visit a friend here."
I caught him looking at something or someone behind me, but when I turned around no one was there.
"What?" I asked.
"Nothing, thought I saw something." He answered culpable.
"Oh, okay." I replied taking a drink of my coffee, a strange taste lingering on my tongue. "This coffee taste a little bitter." I mutter, setting the cup down with a puzzled expression.
"Anything wrong?"
"No, well yes, my coffee just tastes like," I take another sip, "metal?"
A shiver ran down my spine. Why is it tasting like this?
Suddenly I start to feel a little light headed, everything was starting to move in slow motion.
Looking around I saw no one but Maskim.
"Maksim." I said trying to adjust my vision, but we were already walking outside, since when did I stand up? "Where are you taking me." I questioned.
"Home." Was the last thing I heard him say, before I passed out.
