Chapter 38

Morningstar dodged Darkstorm's attack with a swift run to the side and immediately jumped on his back. Darkstorm began to try and knock her off.

He heard how her breath was ragged and shallow. Knowing she was exhausted he began running to a tree to knock her off and attempt to kill her.

The she cat seemed to notice what he was trying to do and jumped off before they hit the tree. Darkstorm hissed in fury as he looked at Morningstar with crazed eyes.

"Why won't you just die?" He ran at her unsheathed his claws and began to claw at her face. The she cat kicked him in the stomach and yowled at him.

"Starclan would never grant you nine lives. You killed your leader for your own power. Shadowclan is doomed with you as the new leader."

Darkstorm hissed at her words and slowly circled her. "I'll be the best leader Shadowclan has ever seen don't you forget that." He ran her into the ground and stared down at her.

"Your nothing but a waste of a warrior to our clan." He lowered his head and bit down on her throat. The she cat clawed as his chest as a last attempt to fight back but soon she went limp.

"Goodbye Morningstar." Darkstorm padded away from her lifeless body and sneered. "I'll be the next leader." He made his way back to the camp but stopped by the river to wash off any blood.

He then caught a frog and a lizard to not seem suspicious about being away from camp for so long. Once he got back maplenose was going back and forth in the clearing.

Curious about what was bothering the she cat he padded over to her to find out what was wrong. "Maplenose are you all right?" The medicine cat looked at him with wild eyes.

"No I'm stressed. Mousecoal lost her kits and Morningstar gave me a warning that I can't decode." Darkstorm nodded and looked at the she cat with a calm expression.

"Would it be all right if you tell me the message?" The she cat looked at him with surprise and sighed. "A fallen warrior will bring destruction to the clan."

Darkstorm licked his chest fur and looked at maplenose. "It mostly likely means there's a traitor in our clan." Maplenose looked at Darkstorm in surprise and sighed.

"I guess your right. That was my first thought but I didn't want to belive that one of our clanmates would harm their own clan." Darkstorm sighed and looked at the sky.

"There will always be a fox hearted cat no matter what the others do." Maplenose shrugged and looked at Darkstorm "I guess sadly that will always be true."

Darkstorm nodded and got up to go and sleep. "Could you wake me up for dawn patrol?" Maplenose nodded and went back to den.

Darkstorm gave the nursery a glance and saw Mousecoal leaving it with sadness glowing in her eyes. He rolled his eyes and padded over to the warrior's den.

When he was in he went to his nest and curled up. He soon fell asleep with soft snores. The soft nudges of Maplenose woke him up for dusk patrol.

He stretched and was about to leave the warrior's den but Maplenose stopped him. "Could you look for Morningstar? She hasn't returned from drinking water and I'm worried that something happened."

Darkstorm nodded hearing the concern in the tortoiseshell's voice. He nodded to the patrol who had Bonefur, Woodheart, and Beetleleap.

He led the patrol to the Riverclan border and decided to talk with Woodheart. "Have you ever wanted to become deputy?" The brown she cat looked at him in surprise.

She shrugged and spoke with sadness "after Lionstar died Poppywing wanted me or Appleshade to become deputy. Frostfury said he wouldn't want to because of the pressure."

Darkstorm nodded at her explanation as she went on. "But Appleshade is dead and I'm left. I wouldn't mind it but I haven't trained an apprentice yet."

Darkstorm nodded and thought about it. Orangekit wanted to become a warrior but who would be his mentor. He looked back at the brown she cat and an idea popped in his head.

Her brother would want someone close to mentor his kit. Tho it really isn't ok for kin to mentor kin Darkstorm would still choose Woodheart to mentor Orangekit.

They soon finished patrolling the borders for Thunderclan and riverclan now they only had Windclan. They were halfway there when Beetleleap called him over.

Darkstorm padded over to where Beetleleap stood. "Look at this leaf." He looked at the leaf that Beetleleap was holding and saw scarlet drops on it.

"This is blood Darkstorm, and look there's more over there." Darkstorm looked over and saw leaves covered in it. He pushed pass the she cat and sniffed around.

Bonefur passed him and followed a small trail. Darkstorm looked at his sister in confusion but in reality he knew it was Morningstar's blood.

The yowl of Bonefur pierced through the air and soon he was running towards them. "I found Morningstar!" Darkstorm nodded and followed the senior warrior.

When he got to the spot he once again saw Morningstar's lifeless body. "It looks like she was murdered." Spoke Darkstorm. The patrol looked at him with wide eyes.

"We must find the cat that killed her! They must pay for their crime!" Darkstorm sneered and looked at them. "Whoever it was is long gone our main priority is getting her back to camp."

The patrol nodded as Bonefur picked up the she cat. They made their way back to camp greif coursing through the patrol. As soon Darkstorm put one paw into the camp yowls of horror made their way to his ears.

Maplenose was the first one to meet them horror and greif swelling in her eyes. "What happened?" Bonefur answered the she cat as he put Morningstar down.

"Beetleleap found some blood and the trail led to Morningstar's body." One of Darkstorm's clanmates yowled that they had no leader but Maplenose stopped the uprising of fear.

"We do have a leader, Darkstorm will be the next leader when I take him to get his nine lives." Darkstorm looked at the she cat with surprise.

Maplenose looked at the camp and explained what happens next. "We shall hold vigil for Morningstar but as soon the sun rises I will take Darkstorm to get his nine lives."

The clan murmured in agreement as Bonefur carried Morningstar to the clearing. "Let us begin the vigil for her." Announced Maplenose.
