Darkstorm woke up in the medicine den to see maplenose fixing her herbs. The tortoiseshell turned with shock. "Your awake I thought starclan took you."
Darkstorm tried to get up but winced in pain as he fell back into the nest. "Woah take it easy your leg is probably sore I managed to pop it back into place."
Darkstorm began to shift in his nest as Maplenose went back to fixing the herbs. "What about Appleshade?" Darkstorm had to know that the brown tom wasn't actually dead.
Maplenose looked at Darkstorm with sadness flooding in her blue eyes. "After Raccoonclaw heard your yowl he took Frostfury and Darksoul to check on you."
Darkstorm remembered the fuzzy memory of Raccoonclaw carrying him. "You were messed up but Appleshade had it worse. He was dead long before I could even do anything."
Darkstorm felt regret burn in his pelt as he curled his tail over his nose. "It's my fault." Maplenose looked at Darkstorm with surprise as he blamed himself for Appleshade's death.
"How is it your fault Frostfury told me he caught a fox on you both saying that probably how Appleshade died." Darkstorm shook his head as he sat up his muscles protesting.
"I could've gotten up faster and save Appleshade but I couldn't. I was to weak and to slow to save him. He had to save me from being killed."
Maplenose looked at Darkstorm with sympathy. "No its not your fault no cat has ever escaped a fox without something happening what did happen was just terrible luck."
Darkstorm began to feel greif struck him again as he remembered Firefoot. "What about Firefoot? Did anyone tell her?" Maplenose stopped for a moment and sighed.
"She was really upset and threatened starclan when she you both jm terrible condition. I can't blame her the kits they both wanted for so long won't know their father well."
Darkstorm began to wish he can sink into the nest as he imagined Firefoot's greif knowing the kits didn't have a father. However Darkstorm stopped when he saw it was morning.
"How long was I out for?" Maplenose gave him gentle licks over his head as she spoke. "You've been out for a couple of days. You missed Appleshade's burial."
Darkstorm felt a surge of energy as he got up with what little strength he had. "I want to visit him." Maplenose looked at him with slit eyes.
"Darkstorm you can't your injured still and walking won't help." The tortoiseshell kept her stance as Darkstorm manged to stand tall besides his limp as he walks.
"I need to visit him. I need to tell him I'm sorry that I couldn't help him." Maplenose stood in front of Darkstorm as he tried to push by her.
"I won't let you leave when you can barely stand up by yourself." Darkstorm used his full strength despite being exhausted to push by Maplenose and escape the medicine den.
Once he was outside Darkstorm let out a hiss of annoyance when the sun glowed right in his eyes. Maplenose ran up to him and began to slowly nudge him back.
"Please Darkstorm I know your hurt but you need to heal." Darkstorm let out a small growl as he fought back. Quickly he felt a soft tackle on his side and saw Beetleleap and Raccoonclaw.
Both of his littermates began to give him licks of joy as he began to wince of pain. "Careful he's still hurt." Maplenose let out a stern mew as Darkstorm's littermates backed away.
"Darkstorm we thought you would never wake up listen to Maplenose so you remain ok." Darkstorm looked at Beetleleap with sadness.
"I have to visit him I have so much regret I won't forgive myself until I visit him." Darkstorm argued with his littermates and Maplenose as they protested against his request.
Immediately Woodheart appeared behind the three cats that argued with Darkstorm. "I'll take him to visit Appleshade." Maplenose turned to see the brown she cat.
"But he needs to rest traveling won't help him heal." Woodheart raised her tail to silence the medicine cat. "Darkstorm wants forgiveness and I'll take him to get it."
Darkstorm looked at the brown she cat with hope as she beckoned him to follow her. "If he goes bring him back before sunhigh." Woodheart nodded with understanding as she walked towards the entrance.
Darkstorm hobbled as he leg ached in pain. Once they were out the camp Woodheart used her shoulder to help Darkstorm walk to wherever Appleshade was buried.
Once Darkstorm saw a small mound with rocks surrounding it he quickly hopped towards it greif overwhelming him again. Woodheart sat besides him as she let out a small mew of greif.
"He was an amazing warrior and he died an honorable death. Protecting a clanmate." Darkstorm looked at Woodheart who's usually bright green eyes were now dull and lifeless.
Darkstorm looked back at Appleshade's grave and sighed. "He really was a great warrior. Starclan will honor him to the end of the clans."
Woodheart nodded as she plucked a flower out of the ground and placed it on the grave. "He will be honored. I just hope the stories Told by Frostfury and me will be enough for his kits."
Darkstorm looked at the sky and took a breath. "Those kits will know how their father was a hero." Woodheart nodded as she stood up.
"Let's go it's almost sunhigh and I don't want Maplenose to box my ears." Darkstorm sighed and began to limp after her. "I'll see you soon Darkstar."
Darkstorm immediately felt his hackles raise as he looked around. "Darkstorm are you ok?" Darkstorm looked at Woodheart with shock.
"You didn't hear that?" Woodheart shook her head as she looked at Darkstorm with concern. "Why what did you hear?" Darkstorm shook his head as he limped after Woodheart.
Maybe the brown tom really was waiting for him. But maybe as the new leader of Shadowclan or a regular warrior.
