Chapter 40

Darkstar watched as his clan surrounded him with questions. "I am now known as Darkstar and I already have my deputy in mind."

The clan seemed to become silent after that and soon Darkstar opened his mouth ready to announce his deputy. "The new deputy of Shadowclan shall be Woodheart."

The clan was still silent even after he announced her name. Bonefur was the first cat to speak up and break the silence. "But she hasn't had an apprentice yet."

Darkstar looked at the gray and white tom and felt wisdom flowing through him. "That may be true but i don't see any other cat worthy of it."

He looked at the still stunned Woodheart as Frostfury congratulated her. Soon more cats began to cheer for her. Darkstar felt pride in choosing her as his deputy.

"She will make an excellent leader, no doubt about that."

Darkstar sat on the pinebranch and watched as Firefoot led her kits to the clearing. Today was their apprentice ceremonies and he had the mentors in mind.

He didn't tell Woodheart since he wanted to keep it a surprise until he announced it. The clan seemed a bit unsure about Woodheart being deputy without an apprentice at first.

However over time they got use to it when she proved to be quite responsible with the duties. Darkstar regained his focus when he noticed the clan was around him already.

He looked down and nodded at both kits and began to ceremony. "Two kits have made it to six moons, Firekit please step forward." The tiny orange tom stepped up nervous as maplenose padded besides him.

"You have reached the age of six moons and you are ready to become apprentice. Your mentor shall be maplenose." The medicine cat licked her apprentices shoulder and nodded to him.

Firepaw held his head up in pride and looked at his mother. Firefoot had pride glowing in her eyes as she watched her kit follow maplenose to wait for Orangekit.

Darkstar grunted and looked down to Orangekit. "You have made it to six moons and your ready to train to become a warrior. Your new name is Orangepaw and your mentor shall be."

Darkstar stopped and looked at Woodheart ready for the clans backlash. "Your mentor shall be Woodheart." The silence almost made Darkstar flinch as he waited.

Orangepaw, Firepaw! Darkstar was surprised about the praises instead of the questions. He nodded and jumped from the pinebranch ready for his duties.

He felt a small tap and turned to see Woodheart. "Why did you choose me to mentor Orangepaw when so many others could?" He sighed and looked into her green eyes.

"I felt that Appleshade would've wanted one of you to mentor his kit." Darkstar watched the glint of thanks flash through her eyes as she went over to Orangepaw.

Darkstar nodded and began to leave camp to hunt. He found a couple pieces of prey and was on his way to bury his lizard until a familiar scent overcame him.

He looked around and saw Tigerlilly looking at him mischievously.  "Hello Darkstar." He felt love well up as he padded over to her.

"Hello Tigerlilly." He nuzzled her affectionately excited to see her after a few days. "What are you doing in my territory a patrol could see you."

Tigerlilly sighed as she stood up. "I smelled you scent and wanted to ask if we could meet by the tree again." Confused but curious about what she wanted to talk about he agreed.

The she cat pured with joy and gave him one last nuzzle before disappearing into the bushes. He sat down and sniffed the air trying to take in her scent that was left.

He picked up his lizard and went back to burying it. Once he caught enough prey for the day he began to unburied what he caught and made his way back to camp.

When he arrived he saw a few cats in the clearing sharing prey. He placed his prey on the fresh-kill pile and took a lizard for himself.

He padded over to his littermates who were sharing a plump bird. Darkstar sat by Raccoonclaw and began to nibble his lizard which was tough to chew but Darkstar enjoyed it.

He looked over and talked with his littermates happy they don't act like he's leader but just their littermate. Once they finished they shared tounges and began to get ready for the night.

Darkstar looked at his den and sighed. He looked at his littermates and had an idea. "Would you guys like to share my den with me? It's a lot more lonely then I thought it was."

His siblings shrugged and looked at him. "I never knew our leader is sad about being alone." Darkstar rolled his eyes as he led them to his den.

Beetleleap left to get more moss for them as Raccoonclaw and Darkstar both settled down. She returned a few moments later and they all curled up.

Raccoonclaw was the first to fall asleep followed by Beetleleap. When Darkstar heard their soft snores he slowly stood up and shuffled his way through them.

Once he was out of his den he ran out of the camp ready to meet Tigerlilly once again. He ran until his paws ached and walked the rest of the way which wasn't to much.

Once he was at the tree he saw Tigerlilly looking around nervously. He padded over to the she cat and gave her an affectionate lick over her ears.

"What's wrong?" The she cat looked at him with surprise but relaxed when she realized it was him. "I'm expecting kits Darkstar."

At first he thought she was messing with him but when he saw her whiskers twitched he realized she was telling the truth. "But the thing is Thornfur is already mates with Bluejay."

Darkstar watched as Tigerlilly explained her plan was ruined. She was happy for Bluejay and Thornfur but now she couldn't protect the kits.

Darkstar decided to offer her a place in shadowclan. "Just join my clan then." Tigerlilly looked up at him with anger and hissed. "I won't join your clan and risk your reputation."

Darkstar felt fury grow in him as his pelt bristled. "I said you should join you won't go out at a rouge with my kits." Tigerlilly rolled her eyes and looked at him.

"It's better then going with you." Darkstar hissed and felt anger more then anything. "I killed my leader for you! I killed my father by accident because of you and this is how you repay me?!"

Tigerlilly looked at Darkstar in horror and backed away. "I didn't ask you to do those things. Now I won't join you." Darkstar felt his blood boil as he watched the she cat stalk away.

"I gave up so much to be leader why won't you join?!" Tigerlilly looked over her shoulder and hissed. "Your a cold blooded murderer Darkstar i won't let my kits live with a father like."

Just like that Tigerlilly left him alone by the same tree they had first secret meeting.
