Chapter 26

Darkstorm padded along the other mentors as they all led their apprentices into the forest for their final assessment. All three apprentices jumped with excitement ready to start.

Firefoot kept training Wolfpaw despite being heavy with kits saying her apprentice won't have to be like her who had to switch mentors.

Darkstorm was proud about how far his apprentice has come. He knew that they were nothing but Rouges in the beginning but now they were full Shadowclan.

A bit nervous they finally made it to the clearing in the forest ready to begin. "Now for the assessment we will be following you to make sure your doing ok but you can't see us." Darkstorm said.

Wolfpaw looked at him with curiosity. "What do we have to do to pass?" The gray apprentice asked. Amusement glowing in her eyes Shrewleaf spoke.

"You see Wolfpaw you must catch enough prey and we will appear and tell you when to stop." Wolfpaw nodded with understanding but Icepaw looked confused.

"But how much prey is enough?" The pale ginger she cat asked. Darkstorm spoke the answer. "Enough prey is when we appear remember this is for your warrior names."

"Also no help will be allowed when the assessment is happening." Added Shrewleaf. The three apprentices looked nervous but determination can be seen in their eyes.

"Your assessment may begin." Darkstorm spoke. Immediately all three apprentices ran off. "Are you sure you can do this Firefoot?" Shrewleaf asked the queen.

The ginger she cat nodded with determination. "I can do it Shrewleaf besides it won't be that hard to keep up." Shrewleaf sighed with exhaustion.

"I'm just saying be careful." The expecting queen nodded and began going in the direction that her apprentice went in. Knowing how fast Lemurpaw was Darkstorm also took off.

Immediately Darkstorm spotted her gray fur. He began to crouch in the grass to watch her and make sure she was doing it right. Lemurpaw was stalking an unaware frog.

He watched as the young apprentice leaped after the frog landing on it perfectly. She picked it up and began to dig a small hole for it. Once she buried her prey she began looking for more.

Darkstorm noticed she was on the move and began to slowly follow her. He caught a scent of a lizard and saw Lemurpaw noticed it to.

Quickly the gray she-cat followed the scent and soon a pale green creature was on her line of sight. Immediately she pounced on the lizard and held her head up in pride.

Proud if his apprentice he watched as she buried it and continued on. A few more pieces of prey later Darkstorm decided it time for her to stop.

Once Lemurpaw buried her bird Darkstorm appeared from a bush. "Your assessment is finished gather your prey and let's go." Lemurpaw looked at him nervously and nodded.

She began to dig up the prey she had just buried and followed Darkstorm as he unburied some of the prey on the way back. Once they managed to grab everything they began to go back.

On the way they spotted the familiar brown pelt of Shrewleaf and Firefoot's flame colored pelt. Their apprentices appeared close by with their prey looking exhausted.

"I take it everything went smoothly for you?" Darkstorm questioned the she cats. "Yes things went smoothly I can't say I was never proud." Purred Shrewleaf.

Darkstorm nodded at the she cats words and walked besides her as they slowly went back to camp. Once the entrance was in their sights they picked up their pace.

Once they made it through the entrance they all went to the fresh-kill pile to place the prey. The three apprentices all went to the apprentice den while Darkstorm and the other mentors went to the leader's den.

Once they were in the den Morningstar was sitting in her nest with hallow eyes. "I assume your hear to talk about your apprentices warrior ceremonies?"

Darkstorm nodded as Morningstar looked at him with blue eyes. "Did anything happen when they were out?" Shrewleaf was the first one to answer Morningstar's question.

"No problems at all they were doing amazing and i believe that they passed their assessments." Morningstar nodded with understanding as she sat up. "I'll announce the ceremonies during sunset."

Darkstorm nodded along with the other mentors. They all left Morningstar's den and went their separate ways. Darkstorm padded towards the warrior's den exhausted.

Darkstorm fell asleep immediately but he soon felt a nudge on his shoulder and woke up to see Beetleleap. "Come on you lazy furball it's time for the warrior ceremony."

Sluggish Darkstorm used Beetleleap for support as he got up. "Your just like father using either me or Raccoonclaw when getting up."

Darkstorm rolled his eyes when he followed Beetleleap out of the warrior's den. Once they were out Darkstorm went to sit beside Shrewleaf and Firefoot.

Morningstar and Chippedclaw both took their places in the pinebranch and waited till every cat was in silence. Once every cat was silent Morningstar began.

"I Morningstar leader of Shadowclan call upon my warrior to look down on these apprentices. They have trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code and I commend them to you as a warrior in their turn."

Morningstar took a gulp of air as she continued. " Wolfpaw, Lemurpaw, and Icepaw do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your clan even at the cost of your lives?"

Darkstorm watched as the three she cats shifted their paws before speaking. "I do." Morningstar nodded with approval as she continued with the ceremony.

"Then by the powers of starclan I give you your warrior names. Wolfpaw from this moment on you shall be known as Wolftail." Wolftail nodded as she went to wait for her littermates.

Morningstar looked at Icepaw next with pride. "Icepaw from this moment on you shall be known as Icefur." Morningstar nodded with approval as Icefur took her place by Wolftail.

Darkstorm watched with excitement and pride as Lemurpaw waited for her warrior name. Morningstar looked Lemurpaw up and down before announcing her warrior name.

"Lemurpaw from this moment on you shall be known as Lemurstorm." The clan erupted into cheers for the three new warriors with Hazelflower's being the loudest.

Darkstorm noticed how Morningstar was waiting and he began to quite down. One the clan noticed they all began to quiet down. Morningstar flicked her tail to Chippedclaw as they all turned their attention to him.

Chippedclaw sat up but he was shaking as he did. "My dear clanmates it was an honor to serve as your deputy for so many moons but I am suffering from sickness."

Darkstorm turned to see maplenose staring with sadness in her eyes as Chippedclaw made his announcement. "I am stepping down as your deputy."

The clan began to let out yowls of confusion as Chippedclaw stepped down from the pinebranch and padded towards the medicine den where maplenose welcomed him.

The clan looked at Morningstar for answers and she nodded with agreement. "Chippedclaw has been sick for a while and we both have already decided who the next deputy is."

The clan all sat in silence as Morningstar announced the next dpeuty. "I say these words before starclan, so that the spirits of our warrior ancestors may hear and approve of my choice."

Morningstar sat in silence as the clan seemed to hold their breaths. "The new deputy of Shadowclan is Darkstorm."
