Chapter 8: Getting to Know the New Kid
When the bell rang signaling first period was over I stood up and put all my stuff in my bag.
“Hey Len?” Mr. Meyer said as I was walking past his desk. I stopped and turned towards him. “Can you show Caleb around for me?” I nodded. Caleb was also standing by Mr. Meyer’s desk. I motioned for him to follow me.
“What’s your locker number?” I asked as I walked towards my locker.
“112.” He replied.
“We’re locker neighbors then.” I grabbed my phone and I had a message. It was from Max, ‘Have a good day. B safe. Love u.’ I turned my phone off and looked up at Caleb.
“Are you ready for history?” I asked. He nodded and we made our way to history class.
“What’s your last name Lennie?” he asked. I realized that was the first time I noticed his british accent.
“Are you british?” I asked. He nodded. “Awesome! Oh and my last name is Brooks. What’s yours?”
“Winchester.”
“So did you move here fromEngland? Or were you living in the states and then moved here?”
“I moved here fromLondon,England.”
“Why’d you decide to move here?”
“Well me mum wanted to get away fromLondon. It was a rubbish reason but I’m glad that we came.” I nodded taking in all the information about the new kid. We walked into history class and I introduced Caleb to our teacher, Ms. Davis. Caleb didn’t sit next to me this period but it was fine. I sat fairly close to him, just two seats over.
“Today we’re learning about the holocaust. I know it’s a sad topic but it’s a standard. Everybody turn to page 341 in your history books and be prepared to take notes.” Ms. Davis said.
It was lunch time and Caleb was sitting with Mark, Lexie, Mia, and I. We were sitting under the big oak tree near the back of the school. Mark and Caleb were talking about something, while Lexie was talking to me. Mia was listening to our conversation but she didn’t talk much because she was stuffing her face with her lunch. Caleb and I had exchanged numbers in 3rd period incase he needed any help. I had a feeling he would become a close friend of ours. We had two more periods after lunch and then the day would be over. Caleb and I had PE next. When the bell rang I led him to the gym. He went to the boys locker room while I went into the girls. I changed into the gym uniform which consisted of blue shorts and a grey t-shirt with our school name on the front. As we ran laps I talked to Caleb. So far I knew that he lived with his mom and little brother, Adam. His dad left him when he was little. His favorite movie is Iron Man. His favorite book Is To Kill a Mockingbird. His favorite sport is football. His middle name is Alexander. His favorite color is blue.
