The drive back home was surprisingly quiet. The only noise was the revving of Evelynn's 1969 Dodge Charger as it raced through the nighttime streets of California. Akali spent her time watching the view and sending texts. Eventually, she grew tired of the silence and broke it by casually asking, "So, why so quiet? I swear, it's like a library."
She glanced at the others, their expressions ranging from thoughtful to indifferent. Kai'sa looked over and shrugged. Ahri stayed staring out the passenger side window. Evelynn, initially focused on the road, turned her attention to the rearview mirror.
Akali felt their eyes meet in the glass. "Just enjoying the ride, Kali," Evelynn said, her tone smooth as silk.
"And you, Ahri? Being this quiet is just weird," Akali stated to the leader.
The vastayan woman shifted in her seat and turned to face Akali. "Just thinking," she replied, her steady voice betraying her thoughts.
"About?" Akali asked, arched an eyebrow.
Ahri looked at Evelynn. "It's....about Seraphine."
"Seraphine?" She waited for her to elaborate.
Ahri nodded, concern in her eyes. "Yes. We wanted to talk to you about....something involving her," she told her.
"Okay?" Akali tried to keep her tone neutral, but the curiosity was still present.
Ahri exchanged a quick look at Evelynn again, a silent agreement passing between them. She took a breath and said, "During her song, did you notice anything....different about Seraphine's performance?"
Akali thought back as the scene replayed in her mind. "Well, she was definitely into it," she mused, "and her voice was....What's the word?"
"Emotional?" Kai'sa chimed in.
"You could tell, too, Bokkie?" Evelynn asked from the driver's seat.
"Mmhmm. Just from how she sang, there was a lot of emotion behind it. But, I wonder, why that song?" Kai'sa asked. "More importantly, why in front of Y/N and the others?"
Akali tried to piece it all together. She remembered how at some points, Seraphine seemingly sang directly to Y/N. And the feeling in her voice as she sang those lyrics.
Why that song, indeed?
A realization clicked in her head, her eyes widening. "Hold on. You mean when she was singing that, she was like, singing....to Y/N?" She waited for Ahri's response, heart racing at the implication.
Ahri pursed her lips. "Well, she wasn't really hiding it," Evelynn added, her voice low but firm. "It's pretty clear who it was intended for."
"And, how do you know that?" Akali asked, turning her attention to Evelynn.
Evelynn giggled and said, "I know my talents, dear Rogue, but I also know love when I see it."
"Love? You think Seraphine's in love with Y/N?"
The diva raised an eyebrow and glanced at Akali from the rearview. "It was all there. You can't fake that kind of a performance."
Akali mulled over the words, which started a swirl of emotions. Worry and jealousy started to creep in. She tried to push it aside, reminding herself that she trusted Seraphine. Right?
"So, what should I do?"
"Awww, is Akali feeling jealous?" Evelynn teased.
Akali's felt the heat rise in her cheeks. "N-No! Of course not!" she retorted, perhaps too defensive.
