Emma slowed her pace when approaching the entrance to Bastet's temple. She was nervous, not about meeting the goddess who chose her as a living vessel, but by realizing this was the culmination of her entire journey from the moment she left Machecoul with her companions. Even before, when Nedjem first appeared in her mother's garden.
She was trying to lead me to Bastet all along. Emma thought. Nedjem padded happily in front of her with her held high and her tail straight up. She was home.
Everything leads to here. Emma paused. At least in my part of the prophecy. And what will happen afterwards? What gift would Bastet bestow on her and would it be enough to match Erzsebet? That uncertainty scared her.
"It will be all right." Emma's guardian angel reassured her. Emma took a deep breath and carried on.
The temple entrance was guarded by two large wildcats perched on either side. Their sharp amber eyes locked on Emma in suspicion. "Sadie and Carter." Valerius introduced. "The temple guardians."
"If you miraculously managed to get past me, they would have eaten you." Maahes chuckled.
"Fantastic." Emma murmured, bowing to the wildcats. "Your patron is expecting me." Sadie and Carter blinked at her in unison. Emma knew enough of cat body language to understand they liked her.
"They're letting you through." Val confirmed. "Go on, Bastet's waiting."
"You're not coming in with me?" Emma looked at him.
Valerius smiled. "This is your path to make, Emma. I'll be waiting for you when you're done."
"Don't keep her waiting, Nephilim." growled Maahes. "She's waited long enough for you."
"Of course. I won't." Emma nodded and followed Nedjem into the temple.
