The moment of realization his Danielle like a boulder. Now that her mom actually said something, her thoughts of it finally came to a reality of it. She moved her eyes between her mom and her brothers. They both had a mortified look to their faces. No one in the room had an idea of what to do. No one knew what was going on.
"Why wouldn't you tell any of us this? You never talk about what really bothers you! We could have helped! I could have help!" She blurted out while hitting her fist on Conrad's chest.
The girl rushed out, hyperventaliting on her way out. Conrad tried to grab her wrist and pull her back, but she reffused and pushed her brother away.
Conrad followed the girl out. "I didn't tell you because you were already going through enough, Danielle."
"I really don't want to talk to you right now." He blocked her from continuing to walk.
"Can't you not be so stubborn for once in your life?"
"Can you not be so emotionless for once?" She yelled at him before he let her go.
Danielle had to figure out for herself that her mother's cancer before the summer started. Her mother recived an email from her doctor about the cancer being back. Everything she did this summer was for her mother and her mother only. She never wanted her brothers to feel hurt like she did. SHe just wanted all of them to enjoy their potential last summer with Susannah.
Danielle can remember more than half of her life as being the worst years because of the cancer. She always wondered what she did to deserve this. All she wanted was for one day her mother to wake up being cancer free for the rest of her life.
Once she was outside of the Country Club, she tried her best to calm herself down, fidgeting with the ring Conrad gave her on her finger, trying her best to hold back anymore tears that threatend to fall.
She felt really guilty for many different reasons. She didn't feel like she should be crying in such a beautiful dress. She shouldn't have been so selfish all summer. She felt so blind as the signs were right there: her mother smoking, the constant tiredness, the fights between her parents.
The guilt was eating her alive.
A door slammed shut from behind the girl. She heared someone walking towards her, a pair of arms then wrapping around her. That's what broke her. She collapsed in Steven's arms, crying into his chest, leaning into his warm touch.
"It's hurts, Steven. It hurts so much." She cried as she and her boyfriend sat on the sidewalk right outside of the club. She wasn't expecting any type of response from him.
"I can't handle my mom being gone. I can't stand the thought of my mother not being around the house, or at my graduation, or getting to see me walking down the isle."
"I'm going to be there. Promise. I know I'm not Susannah, it's never going to be the same, but I swear on everything, I'm going to be there with you. Ever single step of the way. I'm never going to let you go again. Ever." Steven's was very confident saying what he said to Danielle.
She lifted her head from his chest and wiped some of her tears that now stained her cheeks. "My mom always knew we would get together at some point. I'm so greatful for fate bringing us together this summer so she could see it happen." She placed both her hands on his cheeks. "I love you, so much, Steven"
"I love you, too, princess. Always and forever."
