Duke Cederic and High Priest Gabriel met at the Duke's mansion, a rare occurrence since their paths rarely crossed outside of official matters. Their conversation flowed smoothly, primarily focused on the kingdom's current affairs and plans for future endeavors.

As their discussion neared its conclusion, Duke Cederic reached for a stack of papers to hand to Gabriel. Just as he extended the documents, something else on his desk caught Gabriel's eye.

A curious gleam lit up Gabriel's face as he extended his hand and picked up a notebook lying partially hidden beneath other papers. As he flipped it open, the pages revealed intricately detailed sketches of Alaric's beautiful face.

Cederic's eyes widened slightly. He immediately took the notebook back, swiftly placing it in a drawer and acting as if nothing had happened. Gabriel chuckled softly at the Duke's attempt to downplay the situation. But his expression quickly shifted, becoming serious and somewhat menacing, as if a different person had taken over.

"Why is there a drawing of Alaric in your notebook, Cederic?" Gabriel's voice was calm, but there was an edge to it. "If someone sees it, they'll think you have a crush on him. That might not suit the image of Duke Cederic."

The Duke didn't deny it. Instead, he met Gabriel's gaze with a steady look. "If someone knew what the priest, who is soon to become the high priest, was thinking about someone he should not, would it suit your image?"

Their eyes locked, an unspoken understanding passing between them. Gabriel's serious demeanor softened slightly, and he smiled wryly. "It's the choice of God that I like someone."

They both smiled, but beneath their outward expressions, they acknowledged a shared truth—they both had feelings for Alaric.

"Do you know when Alaric will return?" Gabriel asked, his tone almost casual.

"Crown prince Elias birthday has passed, so he should be back within a week," Cederic replied.

Gabriel's gaze grew distant for a moment. "You know it's not just us, right? Too many eyes are on him, including Crown Prince Lucian's."

Cederic said nothing, but both men looked at each other, understanding the complexity of their situation.

Without another word, they shifted the topic back to more mundane matters, each of them waiting for Alaric's return with bated breath. The anticipation was almost palpable, a silent agreement hanging in the air.
