ONYX POV:
The moment Cammy called my name, time felt like it had slowed to a crawl. I could see the confusion flicker across her face as she processed the scene unfolding before her. James, still reeling from my punch, quickly shifted his demeanor, adopting an expression of faux innocence.
"What's going on here?" James said, feigning surprise. "I was just sitting here, and then Onyx decided to lash out for no reason."
I could see the wheels turning in Cammy's mind as she looked back and forth between us, uncertainty clouding her gaze. "Onyx, what happened?" she asked, her tone a mix of concern and confusion.
I took a deep breath, trying to rein in my frustration. "He was making fun of you, Cammy. He—"
"Making fun of her?" James interrupted, crossing his arms defensively. "I wasn't saying anything! We were just talking." He shot me a look that was a mix of disbelief and challenge. "I think someone's overreacting here."
Cammy's brows knitted together, and I could see the doubt flickering in her eyes. It was as if James's nonchalant attitude was creating a rift, and I couldn't bear the thought of her believing his lies. "You're seriously going to act like you didn't just insult her?" I shot back, anger bubbling beneath my skin. "You think this is some kind of game?"
James shrugged, his smirk returning. "Look, I don't know what your problem is, but if you think throwing punches makes you tough, maybe you should reconsider."
Cammy stepped closer, her eyes searching mine for the truth. "Onyx, I know James can be... difficult, but I need to understand what really happened."
Feeling the weight of her gaze, I wrestled with the urge to defend myself and the frustration of seeing someone I cared about caught in the crossfire. "He was mocking you, Cammy. You don't deserve that kind of treatment," I insisted, hoping she could see the sincerity in my words.
"But what if it was just a misunderstanding?" she replied softly, uncertainty lacing her voice.
The tension hung in the air like a storm cloud, and I could feel my heart racing. I had stepped in because I cared, but now it felt like I was losing ground, and the last thing I wanted was for her to doubt me.
"I don't want to fight," I said, trying to lower the heat of the moment. "But I won't stand by and let him make fun of you."
James leaned back, his friends still snickering in the background. "You think you're some kind of hero, don't you? You hardly know her! And, newsflash: Cammy can handle herself."
Cammy looked between us, and I could see the conflict in her expression. It was a painful moment, realizing that my attempt to protect her might be creating more chaos than clarity.
"I need to talk to you both," Cammy finally said, her voice steady but tinged with uncertainty. "Let's just figure this out without all... this."
I nodded, eager to resolve the tension, but James merely shrugged, casting me a mocking glance. "Sure, let's talk," he said, the insincerity evident in his tone.
As we walked away from the group, the shadows of doubt loomed larger. I was desperate to prove my intentions were genuine, yet I could feel the fragile trust between us starting to crack. What if Cammy couldn't see the truth? What if I had just made things worse?
And as we moved to a quieter corner of the school, I prepared for the confrontation, knowing that how this unfolded could change everything between us.
But just as we began to talk, James interrupted again, "Cammy, do you really think he's worth the trouble?" His words hung in the air, a challenge that made the ground beneath me shift.
"Onyx...?" Cammy started, her gaze flitting between us.
The weight of her question filled the space, and I could sense the tide turning. It was now or never, but as I opened my mouth to respond, her phone buzzed, momentarily breaking the intensity of the moment.
And that's when everything spiraled into uncertainty.
