CAMMY POV:

Friday arrived, and anticipation buzzed in the air. I could hardly concentrate in class, my thoughts swirling with excitement and nerves about my date with Onyx. After everything that had happened with James, this felt like a new beginning, but doubt lingered, nagging at the edges of my mind.

As the final bell rang, I gathered my things and made my way to the park. Onyx was waiting, leaning casually against a tree, and when our eyes met, a rush of warmth spread through me. He looked handsome, and for a moment, I forgot my worries.

"Hey, Cammy," he said, his smile instantly easing my nerves.

"Hey!" I replied, feeling lighter as we started to walk together. We chatted easily, laughter bubbling up as we shared stories. But just as I felt the tension of the day begin to dissolve, I spotted James across the park.

He was surrounded by his usual group of friends, his laughter ringing out like a siren call. My stomach tightened. Memories flooded back, and I hesitated. I didn't want this evening spoiled by his presence.

Onyx noticed my discomfort. "You okay?" he asked, concern etched on his face.

"Yeah, it's just... James is over there," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

"Do you want to leave?" he offered, his jaw tightening.

"No, let's keep going," I decided, summoning courage. I didn't want to hide from my past.

As we approached, James's eyes lit up with mischief. "Look who it is," he called, his tone laced with derision. "Cammy and her new boyfriend. How adorable."

Heat flooded my cheeks, a mix of anger and embarrassment. Onyx's posture changed, tension radiating off him as he stepped slightly in front of me, ready to defend.

"James, don't," I said, trying to hold him back.

"Why not? Afraid of the truth?" James stepped closer, leaning in with a smirk. "You've moved on so fast, Cammy. Is this really your upgrade?"

I felt Onyx's frustration boiling beneath the surface. "Back off, man," he growled, the protective instinct evident in his voice.

James's laughter was sharp. "What? You think he's better than me? You barely know him!"

I felt the heat of the moment, frustration bubbling over. "You don't get to talk to me like that anymore, James."

The air grew thick with tension, and I could see Onyx's fists clenching. "Let's just go, Cammy," he said, his voice low and steady.

But James was relentless. "You really think you can just forget everything we had? You'll regret it!"

In that moment, I felt a surge of empowerment. "I'm not going to let you control how I feel," I shot back, my heart pounding. "This is my life, not yours."

As we turned to leave, I caught James's smirk, a mixture of anger and hurt crossing his features. "You'll come back to me, Cammy. You always do."

Onyx gripped my hand, leading me away. "I hate that guy," he muttered, and I could hear the anger in his voice.

"I know," I replied, my heart racing. "But I'm sorry you had to deal with him."

"You have nothing to apologize for. You stood up for yourself. That's what matters," he said, his eyes searching mine.

I felt a mix of gratitude and confusion. The tension of the encounter lingered, but it was also a relief to have Onyx by my side. The reality of my feelings for him was becoming clearer, and I realized that I was ready to embrace this new chapter.

As we walked, the night air cooled around us, and I felt lighter. I wouldn't let James's shadow loom over my happiness anymore. With Onyx beside me, I felt brave enough to confront whatever came next.
