The next day, I arrived at school feeling a mix of excitement and anxiety. Onyx and I had agreed to meet up again, and after the previous night's encounter with James, I was eager to see him but also nervous about any fallout.

As I walked through the bustling hallways, my heart raced with anticipation. I spotted Onyx leaning against a locker, his expression brightening when he saw me. But just as I made my way toward him, I caught sight of James lingering nearby, flanked by his usual group of friends. My stomach twisted.

"Hey, Cammy!" Onyx greeted me, and I forced a smile, trying to shake off the weight of James's presence.

"Hey," I replied, taking a breath to steady myself.

Before we could get into our own world, James approached, a confident swagger in his step. "Well, if it isn't the lovebirds," he said, a smirk plastered on his face.

I felt a flush of anger rise within me. "What do you want, James?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

James chuckled, leaning closer. "Just wanted to see how quickly you've moved on. You really think he's going to treat you better than I did?"

Onyx stepped in, his tone firm. "She doesn't need your opinion, James. You had your chance, and you blew it."

James's eyes narrowed. "You think you know her? You don't have a clue what you're getting into."

My heart raced as I glanced between the two of them. "Enough, James," I said, my voice rising. "I'm not interested in your drama anymore."

"Oh, but it's not just drama, Cammy," he taunted, his voice low and dangerous. "It's the truth. You're playing with fire, and one day, you'll get burned."

With that, he turned and walked away, his friends snickering behind him. I felt the heat of embarrassment and frustration surging through me.

Onyx turned to me, concern etched on his face. "Are you okay?"

I took a deep breath, trying to shake off the encounter. "Yeah, I'm fine. It's just... he knows how to push my buttons."

Onyx stepped closer, his expression softening. "You don't have to let him get to you. What matters is how you feel about us, right?"

Just as I was about to respond, the fire alarm blared, cutting through the air. Students began to file out of classrooms, confusion spreading like wildfire. Onyx took my hand, leading me through the crowd toward the exits.

As we stepped outside, the chaos erupted around us. Students milled about, talking and laughing, but I felt a storm brewing inside.

Suddenly, I spotted James again, standing off to the side with a smug look on his face. He caught my eye and winked, a chill running down my spine.

"What's his deal?" Onyx asked, noticing my reaction.

"I don't know, but I'm done with him," I replied, the words coming out with more conviction than I felt. "I'm choosing to move forward, not backward."

"Good," Onyx said, squeezing my hand. "Let's focus on us."

But just as we turned to walk away, I heard James's voice rise above the crowd. "You really think he can make you happy, Cammy? Don't be naïve."

The words cut through the air, and I felt my heart race. I turned back, ready to defend what we had, but Onyx held me firm. "Let it go, Cammy. He's trying to get a reaction."

For a moment, I felt torn between the past and my present. But then I looked into Onyx's eyes, seeing the sincerity there. I didn't want James's shadow to loom over what could be something beautiful.

"Let's go," I said, taking a deep breath. "I want to be with you, Onyx. Let's not let him ruin this."

With that, we walked away, hand in hand, leaving the noise behind. The uncertainty still lingered, but I was ready to embrace whatever came next. With Onyx by my side, I felt empowered to face the challenges ahead, determined not to let anyone dictate my happiness.
