I watched Onyx pace the room, the phone call having ended but tension still etched on his face. The air felt heavy, the silence almost suffocating.

"Who was that?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

Onyx stopped and faced me, a mix of guilt and anxiety in his eyes. "That was Claire."

"Claire? Your ex?" I felt a chill run down my spine.

He nodded. "Yeah. She called out of the blue. She said she needed to talk to me about something important."

I crossed my arms, feeling a mix of curiosity and dread. "What did she want? And why now?"

Onyx sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Cammy, there's a lot I haven't told you about my past with Claire and the things I was involved in before we met. You need to know the whole truth."

I braced myself. "Okay, I'm listening."

"Claire and I were together a few years ago," he began. "We had a lot of issues, and I was part of a rough crowd back then. Things got messy, and when Claire and I broke up, I decided to leave that life behind. But not everyone was happy about it."

My heart pounded as I listened. "What kind of rough crowd?"

He took a deep breath. "I was involved in a gang. We did some bad things, things I'm not proud of. When I decided to leave, some of the guys felt betrayed. They've been holding a grudge ever since."

I felt a knot tighten in my stomach. "And now?"

"Claire called to warn me," he continued. "She heard that some of my old 'friends' are back in town, and they found out about us. One of them ran into James and bragged about how I went soft. James, being the jerk he is, started spreading rumors about it."

The gravity of his words settled over me. "Onyx, why didn't you tell me any of this sooner?"

"I thought I could handle it on my own," he admitted, his voice heavy with regret. "I didn't want to drag you into my past, into this mess."

I reached out and took his hand, squeezing it tightly. "We're in this together now. No more secrets, okay?"

He nodded, a flicker of hope in his eyes. "Okay. I promise, no more secrets."

Just as we were starting to feel a sense of resolve, Onyx's phone buzzed again. He glanced at the screen, his expression darkening.

"It's a message from one of my old friends," he said, his voice tense. "He wants to meet. Tonight."

My heart raced. "What are we going to do?"

"We're going to face him," Onyx replied, determination in his voice. "But there's something I need to tell you first. The real reason I quit the gang... it was because of you, Cammy. I fell in love with you, and I wanted to be good for you. I wanted to leave that life behind for us."

His words hung in the air, heavy with emotion. But before I could respond, a loud knock echoed through the house. Onyx's eyes widened with fear and recognition.

"That's them," he whispered, his voice barely audible.

My heart pounded in my chest as I glanced towards the door, the tension rising with every passing second. The past was catching up to us, and I wasn't sure we were ready to face it.
