Cammy POV:

Standing between Onyx and James, I felt the weight of their confrontation hanging heavily in the air. My heart raced as I struggled to process everything. I had always known James could be cruel, but I'd never expected to see him provoke someone else like this, especially not Onyx.

"Cammy...?" Onyx's voice broke through my swirling thoughts, pulling me back to the moment. His gaze was intense, earnest, and it felt like he was pleading with me to understand. But then there was James, casually leaning against the wall, a facade of innocence masking his true nature.

"Look, I don't want to get caught up in this drama," I said, trying to diffuse the tension. "James, I know how you can be, but—"

"C'mon, you're not seriously considering taking his side over mine?" James interrupted, a sharp edge to his voice. "We were just having a little fun, and Onyx decided to throw a punch. Sounds like someone's overreacting."

I felt a knot tighten in my stomach. Part of me wanted to believe Onyx, but the other part was hesitant. James had always been charming, often swaying my friends and me with his charisma, and it scared me to think he might twist this situation in his favor.

Onyx stood firm, his jaw set in determination. "I didn't start anything, James. You were mocking her, and I won't just sit back and watch you do that."

My heart ached for Onyx. He had jumped into the fray because he cared about me, and that meant more than I could express. But the uncertainty was a weight that pressed down on me.

"Can we all just take a step back?" I said, my voice trembling slightly. "I don't want to choose sides. I just want to understand what really happened."

James scoffed, the laughter of his friends still echoing in my ears. "You think he's the good guy here? What if he's just trying to impress you?"

The accusation stung, and I could feel my defenses rising. "No one's trying to impress anyone, James! This isn't about that."

As I spoke, a part of me wondered if I was being naive. Was Onyx truly defending me, or was this all some twisted game? I turned to him, searching for clarity. "Onyx, what do you really want from all this?"

"I want you to know that you deserve respect, Cammy," he said softly, sincerity shining through his words. "You shouldn't have to deal with that kind of treatment. I just... I care about you."

The air felt charged between us, and in that moment, I realized that I was grappling not only with my feelings for Onyx but also with the fear of confronting the truth. The reality of my past with James was messy, and as much as I wished it were simple, it wasn't.

James crossed his arms, leaning into the tension. "So, what's it going to be, Cammy? Are you going to let him drag you into his drama?"

My stomach churned with frustration. "I'm not here to fight! I just want to figure this out without turning it into something worse."

Onyx stepped closer, his expression earnest. "Then let's talk, away from all this noise."

I nodded, grateful for the opportunity to remove myself from the chaotic atmosphere. As we moved to a quieter corner of the school, I felt a flicker of hope. Maybe we could find a way to sort through the confusion and establish the truth.

Once we settled on a bench outside, I took a deep breath, trying to steady my racing heart. "Onyx, thank you for standing up for me," I began, the weight of my words anchoring me. "But I don't want to put you in a position where you have to defend me against him."

"Cammy, I'm not afraid of James," he said, looking me directly in the eye. "I just want you to feel safe. You deserve to be treated well, and I can't ignore it when someone disrespects you."

His honesty was refreshing, and a warmth spread through me, cutting through the tension. "I appreciate that. I really do."

But as the moment hung between us, the shadow of doubt lingered in my mind. What if this was only the beginning of something complicated? I couldn't ignore the fact that James would retaliate; he always did.

"Just... be careful, okay?" I said, my voice softer. "I don't want to drag you into something messy."

Onyx nodded, determination etched on his features. "I can handle it, Cammy. I just want to make sure you know you're not alone in this."

Just then, the bell rang, jolting me back to reality. The school day was coming to a close, but the battle of emotions inside me was far from over. I knew I had to confront James again, and I was left wondering how far I was willing to go to protect myself and those I cared about.

As we made our way back inside, the anticipation of what lay ahead loomed over me. Little did I know, the drama was just beginning.
