Deaf Ash AU

A/N- just like snippets of Ash and Gladion, I found this idea super cute, so I hope U enjoyyy

“I’m guessing that this is your newest classmate,” Gladion says. Lillie beams at him.

“Yup!” She says. “Meet Ash! Ash, this is my brother, Gladion.” She tells the second bit to the Rotom Dex floating around. It beeps and moves in front of Ash. Gladion can’t see what it displays but he grins at him and makes a few gestures with his hands.

“He says it’s nice to meet you!” The Rotom Dex chirps. Gladion raises an eyebrow.

“Are you deaf?” He asks. He points to his own ear for emphasis and Ash furiously starts nodding, grinning wider. He almost displaces the Pikachu on his shoulder.

Rotom Dex translates his signing again. “He wants to know if you know sign language.”

“Uh, not really.” He shrugs. “I only know the Alolan sign language alphabet because Lillie was interested in it when she was younger.”

“Hey!” Lillie says. Rotom Dex relays it to Ash, who pouts.

“He says he’s sad, because if he knew ASL he could at least fingerspell with you. He only knows the sign language of Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh.”

“Oh, right. Lillie told me you’re from Kanto.” Ash starts nodding as soon as he sees Gladion say Kanto . He makes a note to check whether or not the name of the region is the same in Alolan and Kantonian. “There’s a ton of Pokémon there that we don’t have, right?”

As soon as Rotom Dex finishes translating Ash lights up. He starts making big motions with his hands, obviously excited.

“He says that the three Kanto starters are Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. Bulbasaur is like a little frog with a plant on its back that has really powerful vines that go whap ! Charmander is a small lizard that has a flame on its tail and can spit fire like whoaaaa! Squirtle is a tiny blue turtle that can spew water like whooshhhhh!” Ash puffs up, hands on his hips. “No way, he’s caught all of them?!”

“Nice,” Gladion says admiringly. “We need to battle sometime.”

Ash perks up at the word battle - probably one of the other words he can recognize in Alolan by now - and starts bouncing on his feet.

“Pika !” His Pikachu shouts. Electricity sparks from his cheeks.

“Wait!” Lillie exclaims, “Don’t forget what we came here for! Ash and I need to finish our project for school!”

“Oh,” He says sheepishly. Ash deflates, then makes a bunch of threatening gestures at him. Lillie gasps but he nods. “Yeah, we’ll battle later.”

Ash beams sunnily at him before Lillie drags him off.

“Right,” Gladion says. Silvally, Lycanroc, and Umbreon look at him. “We need to figure out a strategy to counter someone who doesn’t call out commands.”

“Umbre?” Umbreon asks. He nods.

“Yeah, Ash. He has to have some way of communicating with his Pokémon, but since we don’t know what it is, we need to be prepared for him to be unpredictable.”

“Lycan,” Lycanroc says. Umbreon nods knowingly.

“Vally,” Silvally says, adding in their own two Poké. Gladion shakes his head fondly as it dissolves into a conversation.

It ends with Silvally breaking out into laughter five minutes later, Umbreon following. Lycanroc looks so incredibly smug that he says, “All right, Lycanroc, you’re up first.”
