Two figures carrying a limp body came into view, and I ran faster than ever to close the distance between us. Thomas and Gally immediately laid Newt down and I gave him the first dose of serum. A small groan escaped Newt's throat and he exhaled heavily. I then used the second dose.
He shot up, gasping. "Wh-what's happening?"
"Not a thing," I sigh with relief, pulling him into a hug.
"Hanna, holy shit," comes Thomas's voice.
I slowly peel away from Newt as Thomas is on the ground next to me, fingertips lightly tracing over my bloodied back. I flinch away from him, and he recoils, concern flashing over his face.
"How the hell did that happen?" he asks.
"Probably one of Lawrence's explosions," Gally offers helpfully, hoisting a very weak Newt up. "Shrapnel. We need to get them both out of here."
The walkie in my pocket crackles to life again.
"Hanna, Hanna, do you copy?"
Teresa.
Thomas pulls the walkie from my pocket, supporting me with his other arm, and answers. "What, Teresa?"
"Hi Thomas. I'll get straight to it. We can save Newt. Or... you can. Your blood... it's able to kill the virus, not just slow it down. That's why Brenda hasn't needed to keep up with doses. You saved her. If I can get a bit of blood from you, we can save Newt."
Thomas is silent for a moment. He looks down at me. He lifts the walkie up again and responds, "Where can I meet you?"
"The medical bay."
Thomas turns off the walkie before looking at Gally. "I need you to get them both back. Can you do that for me?"
Gally nods, throwing Newt over his shoulder's fireman-style. He scoots over to me and offers an arm. "I can carry you, but it might help if you walk a bit."
"No need," I force myself to my feet. I can't feel a thing. And I don't know if that's good or bad. Thomas knows what I'm thinking and is already shaking his head, about to argue.
"Thomas, just shut up for once," I held up a hand to silence him. "You're not responsible for everyone and you need to stop blaming yourself for the people we've already lost because it's not your fault. I'm going with you because I love you and I am not letting you out of my sight ever again. Three years in the Maze was long enough. So from now on, we go together."
Thomas sighs and looks at Gally, who shrugs. "Thomas, I wouldn't argue with her. It's never ended well for me."
A small smirk appears on my lips as I turn back to Thomas.
Thomas is trying not to smile, but he takes one look at me and breaks. "Fine." He turns to Gally. "Let the others know where we are but let them know we've got it under control."
Gally rolls his eyes. "They're gonna know I'm lying about the 'got it under control' part."
"Just do it."
Gally nods before regarding us both with kind eyes. "You guys take care of yourselves. Come back to us, alright?"
"We will," Thomas nods. The two boys share mutual looks of respect on their faces.
"Are you two friends now?" I ask.
Gally shrugs, before turning to leave. "I guess we'll never know."
