The next day dawned soft and warm, the sun streaming gently through the curtains of Laura's cozy bedroom. Malachi stirred awake to find Laura still sleeping peacefully beside him, her hair spread like a golden halo on the pillow. He smiled softly, feeling a rush of affection for her.
Quietly slipping out of bed, Malachi tiptoed across the room, careful not to wake Laura. He pulled on a comfortable t-shirt and shorts before padding downstairs to prepare a simple breakfast. The aroma of coffee filled the kitchen as he brewed a fresh pot, setting out plates for toast and fruit.
After a while, Malachi heard Laura's footsteps on the stairs, and he turned with a smile as she entered the kitchen, rubbing sleep from her eyes. She looked effortlessly beautiful in his loose t-shirt and pajama bottoms, her smile warming his heart.
"Good morning," she greeted him softly, her voice still husky with sleep.
"Good morning," Malachi replied, pouring her a cup of coffee just the way she liked it. He set it down in front of her with a plate of toast and fruit. "Breakfast is ready."
Laura sat down gratefully, sipping her coffee and taking a bite of toast. "Thank you, Mal," she murmured, glancing at him with warmth in her eyes. "You didn't have to do all this."
"I wanted to," Malachi said simply, taking a seat across from her kissing her forehead in the process. "Plus, it's nice to have a lazy morning together."
They ate in companionable silence for a while, enjoying the peaceful start to the day. Malachi couldn't help but think about Amelia and the joy she had brought into their lives, even if briefly. He knew Laura must be feeling a mix of emotions after saying goodbye.
"You okay?" Malachi asked gently, reaching across the table to squeeze her hand.
Laura nodded, a soft smile playing on her lips. "Yeah. It was hard saying goodbye to Amelia, but I'm glad she's back home safe."
Malachi nodded in understanding, his heart swelling with admiration for Laura's compassion. "You're amazing with her, you know that?"
Laura blushed slightly, ducking her head. "Thanks, Mal. I just want her to feel loved and safe."
"You do," Malachi assured her, his voice sincere. "And she adores you."
They finished breakfast slowly, savoring the quiet moments together. Afterward, Malachi suggested they retreat to Laura's room to relax. They settled on her bed, surrounded by pillows and blankets, basking in the sunlight streaming through the window.
Laura leaned against the headboard, her legs tucked beneath her. Malachi stretched out beside her, propped up on one elbow. They talked about everything and nothing—dreams, memories, plans for the future. Sometimes their conversation lapsed into comfortable silence, punctuated only by the occasional soft laughter.
As midday approached, they decided to watch a movie on Laura's laptop. They snuggled close together under the covers, the screen casting a soft glow on their faces. Malachi found himself losing track of time, completely absorbed in the storyline and in the warmth of Laura's presence beside him.
Halfway through the movie, they paused to make sandwiches and grabbed some snacks from the kitchen. They returned to the bed, munching contentedly as the movie played on. Laura rested her head on Malachi's shoulder, her fingers absentmindedly tracing patterns on his arm.
Eventually, the movie ended, and they found themselves drifting into a comfortable silence once more. Malachi turned to look at Laura, studying the way her eyes sparkled in the soft light. He reached out to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear, his touch gentle and affectionate.
"You're amazing, Laura," Malachi murmured, unable to contain the admiration in his voice. "I'm so lucky to have you in my life."
Laura's cheeks turned pink, and she smiled shyly. "I feel the same way about you, Mal."
As the soft evening light bathed Laura's room, Malachi and Laura found themselves in a rare moment of tranquility after a day filled with stolen glances and secret smiles. They had been dating in secret for some time now only friends knowing the truth, navigating the delicate balance between their blossoming romance and the looming shadow of Laura's powerful family—her brother, Zack, and their father, the King, who vehemently opposed their relationship.
Malachi had now moved spots from lying on the bed to sitting cross-legged on the floor, leaning against the edge of Laura's bed. Laura was perched beside him, her fingers absentmindedly twirling a strand of hair as they exchanged quiet conversation.
"I wish we didn't have to keep this a secret," Malachi murmured, breaking the peaceful silence that enveloped them. His voice held a hint of frustration, a longing for their love to be openly acknowledged.
Laura sighed softly, her gaze fixed on the flickering sunlight looming in through the sheer curtains. "I know, Mal. It's just... Zack and Father would never understand. They see you as a commoner, someone beneath our station."
Malachi nodded in understanding, his jaw tightening slightly with suppressed emotion. "But you know how I feel about you, Laur. I don't care about titles or status. All I care about is us."
A small smile tugged at the corners of Laura's lips as she turned to face him, her eyes shimmering with affection. "I care about us too, Mal. More than anything."
They sat in companionable silence for a moment, their hands finding each other's in the orange light. Malachi brought Laura's hand to his lips, pressing a gentle kiss against her knuckles. "Do you ever think about the future?" he asked softly, his voice tinged with uncertainty.
Laura's expression softened, her gaze locking with his. "All the time," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "But I don't know what it holds for us, Mal. I want to believe that we can be together openly, without hiding, but..."
Malachi squeezed her hand gently, his heart aching with the weight of their forbidden love. "We'll find a way, Laura. I promise you that. I'll fight for us, for our future."
Laura's eyes shimmered with unshed tears as she leaned closer to him, seeking comfort in his embrace. "I believe you, Mal," she whispered, her voice filled with hope and love.
"I don't know what tomorrow will bring," Malachi murmured, breaking the silence once more. "But as long as we're together, I know we can face anything."
Laura nodded against his shoulder, her fingers tracing gentle circles on his back. "Together," she echoed softly, her voice filled with determination
With a soft sigh, Malachi leaned over and pressed a gentle kiss to Laura's forehead. "Thank you for today," he whispered.
Laura turned to him, her eyes soft and full of love. "Thank you, Mal, for everything."
