Milan

"You guys I'm nervous as shit," I whispered into my phone while outside on the patio, enjoying the sunrise. My sister chuckled as I chewed on my lip. "What if she says no?"

"See now you sound insane," Via said. I imagined her head shaking with a smile. "Did you forget that you're already engaged, Lani?"

"Yeah but she could change her mind by this evening, anything's possible."

"I just don't understand why you're both up this early," my brother groaned, for we had woken him up for this call. "Shouldn't you bee- I don't knoww- sleeping in with the love of your life?"

"Shut up Ramz," I rolled my eyes. "I couldn't sleep much, too anxious-"

"About what, though?" Octavia asked, for she was at work at this hour. "It's Noah, Milan, you don't have a single thing to be worried about."

"It's not that I'm worried, not at all, I just..." A breath escaped with my words as my eyes shut. "This is all so surreal you guys, I just want it to be perfect for her."

"Awe, we know pookie-"

"I have no doubt that it will be-" They spoke at the same time in reassurance.

Nodding to myself, I took another breath while fidgeting with my fingers on one hand. Flexing them out then, I eyed the diamond ring on my fourth finger, sheepishly smiling to myself at the thought of her and our future together.

It was the most gentle and tender reminder that I loved her and she loved me, and that that was all that mattered.

"You're right," I emitted a soft sigh at last, letting my anxieties escape with it. "I'm being ridiculous aren't I?"

"Just a little bit," I imagined Ramzi pinching his fingers with an eye squint. It made me smile and chuckle.

"I miss you two buttheads," my lips twisted with the admission in Hindi. Then I grimaced with laughter once they awed into the phone. "Shut up-"

"Camille and I will be there next week, at Via's," said my younger brother. "Milan, Amma says her visit with you was great-"

"She did??" Octavia and I asked, my eyebrows now furrowing.

Ramzi chuckled. "Yeahh I figured that might've been a stretch from your point of view."

"Typical Amma," Via spoke in Hindi, surely with an irritated eye roll. "What is it with her obsession with image and perfection?"

"At least Baba balances her out," he said.

"If it weren't for him I might've jumped off a bridge a long time ago-"

As Ramzi snickered, my sister sighed. "Lani, you have to stop saying things like that."

Since we were children, I had, and she hated it. Even though Ramzi and I saw the humor in my minimally true comments. Especially when it came to our mother and the conversation was just among the three of us, it honestly would just slip out.
