I know my fiancé very well.

And I know like the back of my hand how she can get, so much so that I woke up today completely prepared for whatever may happen. The way I had been doing all week.

I could tell that she was trying her best not to shut me out or push me away, as well as just how hard this was for her, even if she refused to show it. I could tell that she was trying not to shut down, and to keep going, although her pretending like she was fine was the first step to her doing just that.

Already, I could sense it coming.

This morning, I made sure to wake up before her, even knowing that she would rise early with how little sleep she was getting nowadays.

A couple nights I even woke to an empty bed, having me sleepily go downstairs to find her in the home office working. A few mornings I would wake to her already being downstairs and out on the spacious patio, working again.

This morning, however, Noah finally slept in my arms after I had her drink a full mug of tea last night so that she would sleep and stay asleep.

Underneath the silk fabric of her black pajama top, my fingers gently dragged up and down the length of her smooth back, my other hand cradling her head as she laid on my chest. One of her legs was tangled between mine, and my thumb had been swiping back and forth across the fine hair on her scalp for a minute now as I laid here, staring blankly into space in tracing thought.

Today was Sunday, as well as the day of her father's funeral...

Just a week ago, she had woken me up after a dreamlike date to tell me that we had to go to the hospital. And I'll never forget the look in her eyes when she said it, or the way she slightly turned from my touch when I had laid a sympathetic hand to her cheek.

Although it hurt deep down, I knew why, having me do nothing but say "okay..." In the softest and most understanding tone, all as I watched her nod to keep her emotions further locked down.

It broke my heart to see her with her family at the hospital, and the way she refused to allow herself the same reaction as her devastated brother and mother.

But with Noah, patience was simply the most trustworthy of keys. And one that I would use again and again, no matter how long it took for her to open up to me. Or even to herself.

Looking over at the nightstand on my side of the bed, I withdrew my hand from her head to tap my phone screen and read the time.

Damn... We have to get up now.

A long and devoted gaze to the top of her head came before I brought my lips to her crown twice, having them linger both times as my eyes closed.

I didn't want to wake her, especially not from such a peaceful sleep to the day that was about to follow. I dreaded it all as my hand rubbed her back with more intent before I used the one I had on her head to rub the arm she had secured around my midsection.
