It was around 6:45 pm, the evening on a Friday in July. Summer is already halfway through with a few birds chirping, dogs barking at people coming and going by their home, and children playing outside to enjoy the summer fun only to get called in for food or to pick up their mess. In one of the houses in the neighborhood lived a little girl by the name of Megan Baker, who was playing on the living room floor with her toys as her father was away for work.
The house was silent except for the sound of the clock ticking away the seconds as Megan continued to play with her toys. A few times during her playtime she would look at the window to hear the sounds of children running around and play. While she didn't mind being alone in the house playing with her toys, she did envy the neighborhood children who would come in small groups of two or three to have their little adventures.
She has tried to make friends in her school but to no avail. In a way, she doesn't need to seek that kind of attention since she has her father who comes home to give her a warm hug or some cool stories of what he did at his job. Whenever her father would come home after a hard day of work, he would greet her with a warm smile, hug her tightly, and head to the kitchen to grab himself a cold beer to relax.
At times he would tell her about his day of work which she always loved to hear, her father's stories of how he arrested criminals, saved others when they were in danger, or would complain about how he dealt with people being dumb and unreasonable. Every story he tells makes Megan's love for her father grow, she always admired her father's actions of being a police officer with how he handled things.
At times she would mimic her father's actions through his stories and pretend to be a cop like him. Sometimes when her father was too tired to give her any stories to tell, she would shrug it off since there is always tomorrow or whenever he gets a day off. Today was one of those days when he was tired and would sit in his reclining chair to relax before he made dinner.
Megan sits on the couch and looks over to her father, "Anything exciting happened today?"
Her father opens his beer and takes a long sip, "Not today sweetie, just the usual thing. But hey, when I get a good story, you will be the first to know," He ruffled her hair which made her chuckle, "Now then, why don't you continue to play while your dad watches his TV."
She gave her father a small nod, picked up her toys off the living room floor, and headed to her room to continue to play by herself.
Dad will probably start to come home later than usual. If he's too tired to tell me stories then work must be busy for him. If only the world had fewer bad people then maybe Dad could come home more early. Then again, he probably won't be able to work a lot...
But at least he tucks me to bed and gives me goodnight kisses so I can be happy about that.
After a while, Megan heard her father calling her from the kitchen, "Megan sweetie, dinner!" She got up from her carpet, headed to the dining table, and sat down.
"It's your favorite, my special spaghetti."
Her eyes lit up at the sight of her father's spaghetti, "Yay! I love your spaghetti Dad," her father then set her plate down she started to eat, never getting tired of his spaghetti.
Once dinner was done Megan started to get ready for bed, she headed to the bathroom to brush her teeth, and then to her room to change into her pajamas. After she finished getting ready, she decided to clean up a bit before she headed to bed.
She turned to her closet to put some of her toys away to see the little police costume that her father gave her on her 7th birthday last year. She couldn't help but smile whenever she looked at her police costume.
