I was four when I was brought to the Jeon household. My parents had to wait about three months to finally take me home. I remember stepping into the inviting house, clutching my teddy bear like it was my lifeline.
My new mom and dad introduced me to their son, Jungkook. He was a little boy with big, curious eyes that seemed to hold so many emotions. But instead of welcoming me, he looked annoyed and went back to watching cartoons, barely acknowledging my presence.
The days that followed were lonely. Jungkook avoided me, making it clear that I was an intruder in his house. Despite this, my parents did everything they could to make me feel at home. Mom cooked my favorite meals, Dad took me to the movies and parks and played with me around. I got new barbie dolls and clothes every now and then, and they also gave me a beautifully decorated room.
Their kindness and efforts were completely opposite to the cold shoulder I received from my brother.
I tried to get him to like me, hoping he would see me as a friend, a sister, but his jealousy was obvious. It followed me everywhere I went. It wasn't just the way his eyes narrowed when Mom and Dad doted on me, trying to make me feel welcome and loved. It was more apparent during the times when friends and other family members would be drawn to me, intrigued by the new addition to the family.
I remember playing with my toys in the backyard and seeing his annoyance as his friends Taehyung and Hoseok asked me to join in. Each laugh I shared with them seemed to deepen Jungkook's scowl. His friends would sometimes compliment or give me more attention, and I could see how much it bothered him. He often retreated into a sullen silence or just snapped at me, shooing the boys to his room.
The house, once his undisputed kingdom, now felt like a battleground where every bit of attention I received was a victory that came at his expense. It made my heart ache because all I thought about was being his friend, not the others, but his jealousy was a barrier I just couldn't breach.
Every time I tried to engage him, he would either ignore me or respond with irritation. It hurt, but I didn't give up. I wanted so badly to be part of his world, to be accepted by him. The turning point came after our argument. Jungkook had screamed that I wasn't his sister, his words cutting deeper than any physical wound. I was devastated.
However, a few days later, as I sat coloring at the coffee table, he approached me. He didn't say anything, just sat down in front of me and began drawing a few things himself. He was still annoyed, it seemed, though I saw it as a start.
Our parents had watched us in the corner, their eyes showing hope. They knew how hard it was for Jungkook to accept me, but they never gave up on us. Seeing him get closer to me for the first time, even grudgingly, was a small victory for them.
It wasn't long before Jungkook turned six. The house was full of people during his birthday party, including neighbors, aunts and uncles and our grandparents too. He was the center of attention that day and Mom and Dad were constantly snapping pictures of him, capturing every moment. He, with his wide grin and bright eyes, soaked up all the spotlight.
It was his day, and everyone was there to celebrate him.
When it was time for the cake, everyone gathered around. I stood a little off to the side close to Dad, holding my teddy bear, smiling as they sang "Happy Birthday." I clapped along as he blew out the candles, and everyone cheered.
After the cake, we moved outside for a barbecue. The grown-ups set up the grill and chatted among themselves while the kids ran around, playing hide and seek. I stayed by myself, sitting on the grass with my doll, trying not to bother.
I could hear the laughter and shouts of Jungkook and his friends as they darted in and out of hiding places. That's when I glanced up and noticed him watching me. He had paused in the middle of the game, his eyes fixed on me.
For a moment, I thought he would just turn away, but then he slowly walked over.
"Do you want to play with us?" he asked hesitantly.
I was surprised and stared at him for a second, unsure if he really meant it. But his expression, though a bit reluctant, appeared to be sincere. I nodded quickly with a smile.
"Okay," he said, turning back towards his friends. "Come on, we're playing hide and seek. You know how to play, right?"
"I do."
I followed him, still holding my doll, as he led me to where the other kids were. They welcomed me into the game without much fuss, and soon, we were running around the yard, hiding behind trees and bushes.
As we played, I glanced over at Jungkook whenever I had a chance. He was running and laughing; his usual contempt was gone that day—at least for now. And then, it happened. Once we hid behind a tree together, he turned and smiled directly at me. It was a simple smile, but it felt like the sun breaking through the clouds. He had never done that.
Our parents were talking in the background, unaware of the small but significant change happening between us. Jungkook's smile was a tiny crack in the wall he had built around himself because of me, and now it looked like he was finally letting it fall.
For the first time since I arrived, I felt included in his life.
