It all started with Park Jinyoung.
I remember the exact moment I started liking him. We were in the eighth grade, and it was during art class. He sat across from me, his head bent over his sketchbook, completely focused. There was something about the way he furrowed his brows in concentration and the smile he had when he was satisfied with his work.
That's when I realized I had a massive crush on him.
Over time, I noticed things other than his talent. He was always kind to everybody, helping classmates without hesitation, sharing his thoughts when he needed to, acting like a gentleman, and so on. He had this laugh so contagious that others just had to laugh along with him. And his eyes... they were the softest shade of brown, like melted chocolate.
Sometimes, I started scribbling his face in my sketchbook every so often. It was my little secret.
Speaking of sketchbooks, I was at it again, trying to capture his smile when my friends, Chaeyoung and Mina, barged into my bedroom without invitation. I quickly hid under my pillow, but apparently, they already knew what it was.
"You've been drawing him again, haven't you?" Chaeyoung teased, plopping down on my bed.
Mina stole the book from under my pillow before I could stop her. "Wow~you're getting really good at this, Ji. Look at those eyes! So dreamy!"
I blushed, trying to snatch it back. "Please, you guys! Stop."
I couldn't expect anything less from them, to be honest. Both were my best friends, and we have been inseparable since elementary school. Chaeyoung was the bold one, never afraid to speak her mind, just like Jinyoung. She had a wild imagination and always had the craziest ideas. Mina, on the other hand, was quieter, but wit and dry humor always had us in stitches. Together, they made the perfect duo.
"Alright, so let's see this latest masterpiece," Chaeyoung said, grabbing my sketchbook from Mina and flipping it open to take a peek herself.
I sighed, giving up. "Fine, but be nice."
They both stared at the drawing, a look of awe on their faces. It was Jinyoung, of course. I had spent hours getting his features just right – the curve of his lips, the shape of his eyes, the way his hair fell across his forehead. But the one they were currently staring at was my best work yet.
"This is amazing, Jieun," Mina said.
Chaeyoung nodded. "Yeah, it's like he's right here with us."
That drawing had been the turning point for them. They convinced me that enough was enough and that I had to tell him how I felt before someone else did. Jinyoung wasn't popular, but he was quite a catch, and most girls knew that.
