Lunch at the Jeon household had always been a time of light conversation, but today, the atmosphere was different. Jieun's parents exchanged glances, their faces tense. They had been deliberating over this discussion for weeks, unsure of how to approach it.
They had known this day would come, the day they would have to address the question of her biological parents. They had put it off for as long as possible, hoping to protect her from the pain and confusion it might bring. But as she neared adulthood, they felt it was their responsibility to give her the choice, no matter how difficult it might be for her and for them.
Mrs. Jeon cleared her throat, glancing at her husband for support. "Jieun, sweetheart," she began cautiously, "there's something we need to talk to you about. It's... it's not an easy topic, but we think it's important."
Jieun looked up from her plate, sensing the shift in the room. Her parents' faces were carved with concern, and she knew whatever they were about to say was big. She quickly glanced at Jungkook, but he also seemed clueless.
Her father took a deep breath. "We've been thinking a lot about your future, about what might be best for you. And we want to know if you've ever considered... meeting your biological parents."
Jieun's fork clattered to her plate, her appetite vanishing instantly. Her eyes widened in shock, and a storm of emotions bombarded her—confusion, anger, fear. She had always known she was adopted since the first day, but her parents had never pressed the issue of her biological family. To hear them bring it up now, so suddenly, felt like a betrayal.
"Why are you asking me this?"
Her mother's eyes were filled with tears, and she reached out a hand to Jieun. "We just want what's best for you, honey. We thought... maybe it's something you might want to explore, now that you're almost eighteen."
Jieun's head spun with questions. "I don't want to meet them," she frowned. "I don't need to know them. You're my parents. This is my family. Why are you trying to change that?"
Her words were answered by a sudden silence. Her parents looked at each other, not knowing what to say, while Jungkook, who had been quietly observing the exchange, felt the need to protect his sister. He knew how sensitive the topic of her adoption was, and he could see how much this conversation was hurting her.
Mrs. Jeon's whispered words broke the silence, "We're not trying to change anything, Jieun. We just thought..."
"You thought what?" Jieun cut her off. "That I'd just be okay with this? That I'd want to go and meet the people who gave me up?"
Mr. Jeon tried to step in, his voice calm. "Honey, we want you to have all the information and to make your own decisions. We love you, and we'll support you no matter what. Things won't change because of it."
