The oppressive silence enveloped us like a suffocating blanket after Mom left my room. It pressed down on me, making it hard to think clearly. There was no rush of adrenaline anymore—just a crushing feeling that seemed to settle in the pit of my stomach and pull at my chest.
We stood there in the aftermath, still in disarray from the suddenness of it all, half-dressed and struggling to come to terms with the gravity of what we did.
I swallowed hard, trying to force the lump out of my throat as I finally looked at Jieun. She looked small, almost fragile, and I hated seeing her like that. I wanted to say something to make it better, but the words stuck in my throat.
We had to face her. Mom wasn't going to just let this go. I could feel it, the finality in the way she'd walked out of here. There was no escaping it.
"We should go check on her," I muttered, barely able to get the words out. My voice sounded weak, even to me.
Jieun nodded, but still didn't say anything. Her face was pale, lips pressed into a thin line. She didn't trust her voice either, and honestly, I didn't blame her.
We finished getting dressed without another word, both of us waiting for the other shoe to drop. I didn't know how bad it was going to be when we found her, but I knew it wouldn't be good.
Finally, I opened the door, stepping into the hallway like we were walking into some kind of punishment. Standing there in the kitchen doorway, it appeared as ifthe walls were closing in. Mom was hunched over the kitchen table, gripping the edges, looking like she was trying not to collapse.
Jieun was behind me, quiet as a ghost. I knew she was just as freaked out as I was, but she didn't say a word, just stood frozen by the door, probably hoping Mom wouldn't see her. She hadn't noticed we were still standing there, or maybe she just didn't care. Her breathing was all over the place, and I could see her whole body trembling with the anger she hadn't let out yet.
"Mom..." I stepped forward, not wanting to set her off again, but it was too late for that.
She whipped around so fast I thought she was going to scream, but instead, her face twisted in pure shock. "Why are you still here?" Her voice was sharp like a blade. "Get out! Both of you! Just leave!"
"We're not going anywhere," I said, stepping further into the kitchen. "We're not leaving until we fix this."
"Fix what?" she screamed. "There's nothing to fix! This—this is a disaster! You've destroyed everything!" Her voice got louder with each word, shaking so much I thought she'd break apart right in front of us. "This is beyond anything we ever expected from you! How could you betray our family like this?! I can't even—" Her chest heaved, and suddenly she swayed, her hand flying to her head as if she was losing her balance.
