Jieun crept out of Jungkook's room early that morning with her heart hammering in her chest. It was the third time that week. The click of the door shutting behind her felt like a bomb going off. She paused, glancing down both sides of the hallway, checking if anyone was around.

Silence.

She exhaled in relief and made a beeline for her room, moving as quickly and quietly as possible. But just as she reached her door and turned the knob, a voice behind her sent ice down her spine.

"Jieun."

Her entire body went rigid, panic flooding her veins. Slowly, like someone pressing slow motion on a movie, she turned to see her mom standing there, holding a laundry basket. Her eyes were fixed on her, a little too sharp, a little too curious.

"What were you doing in Jungkook's room?"

Jieun's heart plummeted to her stomach. She forced a smile, but her mind scrambled, gears spinning wildly for a decent excuse. Something simple, something believable. But the nerves must've been written all over her face, because her mom's gaze was already narrowing.

"I—uh, I was just—" she stuttered, weak and shaky. "I was looking for my hoodie. I must have left it in there."

Her mom didn't move, just kept staring. Her eyes flicked over Jieun, taking in every nervous detail. She wasn't buying it. "Really?" she asked, her tone slightly suspicious. She shifted the laundry basket to her other arm. "That's funny because I just walked into your room to wake you up, and you weren't in there... It didn't take that long to grab a hoodie in your brother's room, did it?"

Jieun could feel herself cracking under her mother's stare. Her mind went blank for a second, and her pulse raced as if she was about to be interrogated. The excuse was crumbling in real time.

Her throat tightened, and for a second, she couldn't breathe. Just say something, she told herself.

"I—" she hesitated. "Okay... I spent the night there. We... we fell asleep talking last night. I didn't mean to stay in his room."

"Hmm," was all her mom said, the sound stretched out long enough to make Jieun's insides twist. "I thought you both had stopped this habit years ago."

Jieun nodded, but her face must've been betraying her. "Just... reliving old times, I guess. He's going to college soon, so we wanted to make the most of the time we have left."

Her mom raised an eyebrow. The look on her face was calm, but there was an undercurrent of suspicion that Jieun could see it. But she had to stand there and take it, praying her mom didn't push harder.
