The guilt from that night was too much to handle. As I sat on the edge of the bed, I realized that staying in the room with Jieun would only make things worse. I wasn't really prepared to face the line that we had just crossed.
I needed space to think, so I left the room, seeking solace in the quiet corners of the house, hoping the distance would help clear my mind. I didn't return because I knew being near her would only reignite everything again.
After that night during Christmas, Jieun and I slept in different beds for the rest of the vacation at Grandma's house—somehow, she had managed to make one of our cousins switch with her.
We drove home in complete silence. I kept my headphones on, staring out the window while Jieun fiddled with her phone, sitting as far away from me as possible. The tension between us was so obvious I knew our parents were picking up on it.
Once there, the days dragged on, with Jieun and I continuing to ignore each other completely. It was as if we were strangers living in the same house again. Every time we crossed paths, it was like we didn't know how to react around each other anymore.
"Jungkook," Dad called me out one evening while I was in the garage. "Can I talk to you for a minute?"
I nodded, setting down the wrench I was holding. "Yeah, what's up?"
He looked at me, concern etched on his face. "Did something happen between you and your sister? I haven't seen you two talking since we got back from Grandma's. Have you two been fighting again?"
I shook my head, shrugging it off. "No, Dad, we didn't fight. Everything's fine."
"Are you sure?" He didn't look convinced.
"Yeah, Jieun's just busy with her stuff. I got my own things too... That's why we are so distant."
"Alright, just... make sure you look out for her, okay?"
"Always," I affirmed with a smile, hoping he would drop the subject, which he fortunately did.
The next day, I decided it was time to face my demons.
I had just come back from taking the dog out and walked through the back door, heading toward the laundry room. There, I found Jieun taking out clothes from inside the dryer. She looked up when she heard me come in, her eyes briefly meeting mine before she looked away.
I leaned against the doorframe, watching her for a moment. She seemed tense, her movements stiff. I could feel the same thing building up inside me, and I knew we couldn't go on like this. "Yo," I said, my voice breaking the silence.
"What?" she replied without looking up.
I looked over her face as a muscle in my jaw flexed. "We need to stop acting like this. Mom and Dad are asking questions."
