Jungkook stood in the living room, his backpack slung over one shoulder, staring at the door like it was a portal to another world. Today was the day. He was heading off to college, and part of him felt like he was leaving everything behind.
His mom was outside, talking to his dad through the car window, her arms crossed and face a bit tight. They hadn't talked much lately, and neither was making an effort to change that. "Are you ready?"
"Yeah. I'm ready..."
"Make sure you call when you get there," she said, her tone more businesslike than motherly. "You have everything? Books, clothes?"
"Mom, I checked," he reassured her, forcing a smile.
"Alright," she muttered, and for a brief moment, her eyes changed to something softer, but they vanished almost instantly, and she looked away. "Take care of yourself."
As he was about to make his way to the car, Jungkook noticed Jieun standing a few feet away, staring at the pavement like she wanted to be anywhere but there and he knew she was holding back, trying not to show what she was feeling, especially with their parents watching so closely.
He didn't care at that moment and stepped toward her. Jieun looked up at him, surprised. She hadn't expected him to do that.
"Guess I'll see you soon."
She was rigid, her jaw clenched, but when their mom looked away for a moment, she caught his eye and gave him the smallest nod. It was their secret communication, but it was enough. She leaned forward, giving him a quick, forced hug. It was stiff, over too soon.
Their dad cleared his throat from the driver's seat. "We should get going, Jungkook," he called out.
Jungkook nodded, giving Jieun one last glance before climbing into the car. As they pulled away, he caught a glimpse of her in the side mirror, standing by the curb, arms crossed tightly, still not looking up.
The drive to the college was mostly silent. His dad wasn't much of a talker at the best of times, and right now, neither of them seemed to know what to say. Jungkook stared out the window, trying to push down the knot in his stomach.
When they finally pulled up outside the dorms, his dad parked the car but didn't make any move to get out. "Well," he started, pausing as if he wasn't sure how to finish the sentence. "This is it."
Jungkook nodded, gripping the handle of his door. "Thanks for driving me."
His dad gave a short nod in return. "Call us when you get settled."
As Jungkook stepped onto the college campus for the first time, everything felt different. Familiar faces drifted around him—old friends from high school, now scattered across different majors. Among them, he spotted Minho and a few other guys. They would hang around every now and then, but his mind was always on Hoseok and Taehyung, who had stayed behind in their local college.
Classes rolled by, and Jungkook was introduced to many new people. Some were friendly, others too caught up in their own worlds to notice him. Still, he tried to engage with his group, sharing a laugh here and there. Late-night practices also became his escape.
As he walked to his first class one day, he bumped into Jimin, an old classmate. "Hey, Jungkook! How's it going?"
"Nothing much..." Jungkook replied absently, his fingers hovering over the cell phone. He and Jieun had been texting non-stop since he left, sharing snippets of their days. He didn't hate it, but it wasn't the same. He missed her real voice.
"Missing someone?" Jimin teased, noticing his distraction.
"Uh, no. Just busy, how about you? Where are you heading?"
"The court. Wanna come?"
He did, and after the practice, he pulled out his phone again and quickly checked for messages. There it was—another text from her.
💬 "How was your day? Miss you! 💜"
He couldn't help but smile. Typing back was automatic now.
💬 "Boring as usual. Miss you too. "How's your senior year going so far?"
The next few days followed a similar pattern. Classes, basketball practices, and quick chats with new acquaintances filled his schedule. One evening, after a particularly tiring lecture, he received a text that made his heart drop.
💬 "I was asked out by a new student today. It was hard to give an excuse when my friends were right there, hoping I'd say yes.
A pang of jealousy twisted in his stomach.
💬 "Mm. Is he cute?"
Jungkook instantly regretted that, wishing he could take the words back. But fortunately, Jieun took it lightly.
💬 "He's okay, I guess? Not as cute as you, though..."
Her playful tone eased the stress, and he chuckled despite himself. He had been asked out a few times too—girls from class who seemed to find him charming or cute, compliments he brushed off. It didn't feel right to share that part of his life when hers seemed to be shifting without him.
"Dude, what's up with you?" one of his new teammates asked during practice when he, again, appeared to be distracted. "You've been in your head lately."
"Sorry, man... it's a lot on my mind right now," Jungkook scratched the back of his head. "I'll focus."
"You know, there are girls here who would kill to date you."
"Yeah, you should take a break and enjoy it a little."
Jungkook forced a smile. His friends could already tell that there was someone back in his town that he had left behind because of the constant texting and calls. The fact that he ignored most of the girls who would hit on him made it clear that he wasn't interested in anyone else. But that didn't stop them from trying to take him to parties on the weekends.
Most of it that Jungkook just refused to go.
One night, he finally opened up to his roommate about it. "The thing is, I miss my friends... and also my—" he stopped midsentence, frowning at himself.
"Girlfriend?" his friend arched a brow. "The girl you're always texting, right?"
Jungkook hesitated. Girlfriend? Even though it would be the perfect word to explain what they had, he never thought about that word when thinking of Jieun before other than his sister.
"Yeah..." he smiled. "My girlfriend. I miss her."
As he lay in bed staring at the ceiling that night, he sent a message.
💬 "I miss you more than I thought I would."
It was late, so he didn't expect to receive a response. But to his surprise, it took only a moment before her reply came through.
💬 "Me too. It's been tough... when will I see you?"
