Weddings are supposed to be happy occasions, right? I was trying to keep that in mind as I stood at the edge of the dance floor, watching the reception. It was my uncle's wedding, everyone seemed to be having a great time, and I should have been, too. But my eyes kept looking for Jieun, and that's when the sour feeling in my gut started.
She was dancing with some guy I didn't recognize, someone from my uncle's wife's side, I believe. She was laughing and spinning around in her blue dress. I clenched my jaw, trying to ignore the sudden jolt of jealousy that flared up. It was ridiculous. She was just having fun, but seeing her with someone else made my chest tighten in a way that didn't feel like brotherly affection.
"Why aren't you dancing, man?" Taehyung's voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
"I don't feel like it," I muttered, not taking my eyes off my sister.
Taehyung followed my gaze and raised an eyebrow. "Ah, I see. You've got the jealous brother vibe going on."
I never answered him, though I knew he was right. I couldn't deny it anymore. Watching Jieun dance with this guy was sending me up the wall. It was clear the kind of intentions he had with her.
"Come on, man. Just go cut in," Taehyung suggested, nudging me with his elbow. "It's a wedding. No one's going to think it's weird if you dance with your sister."
I hesitated, but then I saw Jieun throw her head back in laughter at something the guy said, and that was it. I couldn't stand it anymore. I walked across the dance floor, trying not to look so obvious, and when I reached them, I tapped the guy on the shoulder, forcing a smile.
"Can I steal my sister for a second?"
He looked a bit surprised but stepped back politely, probably intimidated by my height. Jieun turned to me once he left, frowning. "You want to dance?"
"Yeah," I said, pulling her waist. "Why not?"
The instant her chest hit mine, she caught the irritation in me. We started to dance, the music slower now. "You seemed upset..."
I shook my head, playing it cool. "Just didn't like that guy."
She chuckled. "You don't even know him."
"Neither do you," I fired back, my grip on her tightening a little. "Doesn't matter, anyway... I didn't like the way he was looking at you."
Jieun tilted her head, wrapping her arms around my neck. "How was he looking at me?"
I looked down at her lips, my voice coming out lower than I intended, "Like he wanted more than just a dance."
Her eyes flicked to my lips too for a brief second before meeting mine again. "And you didn't like that?"
"No," I admitted, the admission tumbled from my mouth before I even realized I was speaking. "I didn't."
The room appeared to blur around us, leaving just the two of us in focus. She leaned in closer, her lips just inches from mine, and whispered, "Why does it bother you so much, Jungkook?"
I had to close my eyes to take in her scent. It was uniquely her, and nobody else had it. "Because... I don't want anyone else looking at you like that."
She swallowed, and I didn't move, didn't even blink. Everything she had seen in my face moments ago remained, and she didn't quite know what to say or do. "It had never seemed to bother you before..."
"Maybe I've changed..."
"Is that a good thing or a bad thing?" her voice came out a little breathless.
"Depends on how you look at it."
I suddenly realized we weren't dancing anymore; we were just standing there, holding each other. The music played on, but we were frozen in place with her arms still around my neck and my hands resting on her waist.
There wasn't even a wedding going on anymore, just the awareness of her closeness, the way we could feel our breaths and the silence making it impossible to move or speak. All I could concentrate on was the look in her eyes and the attraction I felt for her.
I sighed, bracing myself for what I was going to share. "Seeing you with someone else—anyone else... it's starting to get to me."
Jieun blinked and moistened her lips, making me look down at them. "In what ways?"
"Not in good ones," I murmured. "I can't stand it."
"Why?"
I leaned in, feeling the friction between us intensifying by the second. "Does it matter?"
Her breath caught, and she whispered, "Jungkook..."
Just as the tension reached its peak, my uncle and his new wife interrupted. The music had changed to a lively tune, and they wanted to dance with their niece and nephew. We were pulled apart, each of us taking a different partner.
As I danced with my new aunt, I kept my eyes on Jieun across the floor, noticing she was doing the same. It was a relief, in a way—all these interruptions we were having.
Each time we were pulled back to reality, I recognized how dangerous it was to lose ourselves in these moments. The consequences of being unaware of the public and of our families would have been bad—really bad.
