Chapter Thirty - Catching Up

After being duly chastised by Tanya, Adam was flustered. Anne felt really bad for cornering him like that.

"Of all the people, you end up being a douchebag!"

"Listen, it was my fault for taking the bet. But I really love Anne."

Anne blushed at Adam's public announcement of his love for Anne. She bit her lower lip, to stop herself from smiling.

"It was stupid. He would never act upon it." Neil stepped in.

"You keep out of this. You should have spoken up earlier when your words matter. You call yourself a friend?" Tanya spat at him.

"Tanya, please. Just let it go. It was a long time ago. I trust Adam will all my heart." Anne tried to calm down Tanya while mentally cursing herself for distrusting Adam. "He has been there for me even when I pushed him away. I know he is here to stay."

"You are a poet and you didn't even know it." Neil nudged Anne teasingly, trying to make the situation lighter.

Tanya rolled her eyes and snapped her fingers at Adam who was gazing lovingly at Anne. "I love you like a brother but if you ever hurt Anne, you will have to deal with me. You better hope there won't be a next time, cuz I won't go easy on you. Not even Anne can stop me from making you..." Anne hugged Tanya, shutting her up. She had never thought she would make a friend who would stand up for her. She silently thanked the lord for bringing her into her life. She felt bad that sometime in the past, she wanted to use Tanya for revenge.

Tanya glared at Adam and he tugged his own ears while mouthing 'sorry'.

"Now go hug him, I know you have been dying to." Tanya teased Anne and she happily obliged.

"I missed you so much." She whispered to Adam.

"You have no idea." He sniffed her hair, which smelled like sunshine to him.

"How long are you staying here?"

"Well, not for long. Things are still a mess at Smiths. I somehow managed to take a leave."

"You have to meet my mom though."

She let go of him and looked at him in surprise.

"You want me to?"

"Of course. In fact, she was asking me to arrange a meeting with you. But you were too busy so.." He shrugged.

"You told her about me? About us?" He nodded. "What did she say?"

"When will my turn come?" Neil asked impatiently. He hadn't gotten a chance to speak with his best friend. Anne stepped aside guiltily.

Neil put his arm around Adam's shoulder to get his ears within his reach, whispering, "When are you coming back, man? These girls are killing me."

"We heard that." The girls shouted together and giggled.

Adam took them to his house in Seattle where they finally met his mother. While they were settling in for the night, Anne got a text from her colleague.

"Please come back soon. He is asking for you."

"Dammit."

"I'll be leaving tomorrow morning."

She replied back.

The stay was short, but she was thankful for it nonetheless. Tanya and Anne were in the guestroom while Neil bunked with Adam.

Anne was trying her best to get shut eye but was failing miserably. She heard a tapping at the door. She lightly walked towards the door.

"Adam?" She whisper shouted. "What are you doing here at this hour?"

"Shhhh. Tanya will hear you." He pulled her outside the door.

"She is scary, you know?" He smiled bashfully. Anne got conscious of her sleepwear and crossed her arms.

"Yeah, sorry about it. It just slipped out, you know?" She smiled apologetically at him. He hushed her by putting his finger on her lips and she shivered at his touch.

"The cat is out of the bag. But you have to pay for what you've done." He smirked naughtily and before Anne could react, he pulled her into a kiss. She tried to push him off at first, but finally gave in since she had missed it as well.

"Is that payment enough?" Anne asked when they finally broke the kiss.

"Nope." Adam grinned smugly.

"You are awfully happy to see me, aren't you?"

"Yes. I'm tired of being mature. I'm missing out on all the fun." He complained, while undoing the top button of her pajama top.

Anne swatted his hands.

"This is so wrong at so many levels. But," She put her arms around him, while leaning against his chest. "I need to return early morning tomorrow."

"What? Why? I thought we could go have a romantic dinner tomorrow." He whined.

"My boss is being difficult." She explained.

"Does someone need to be introduced to my knuckles?" He asked while swaying subtly with her.

"I would like to keep my job." Anne smiled at him.

"Well then, I need to prepone the romance. Come." He took her to the roof. The view was breathtaking.

Adam hugged her from behind, swaying along with her in a slow rhythm.

"I know you love the lights. And I love you cuz you are my light." He leaned down to her ear and kissed her neck, making her shudder at contact. "I come up here at night, when I miss you so much and cannot sleep. It calms me down." He sighed.

"I know things are difficult right now. You probably feel like I am not giving you enough time. But trust me, I am trying."

"I know baby. It was stupid of me to think otherwise." She looked back at Adam. "But I know we will make this work. After all this time, my passion for you has not subsided. And judging by the way you are looking at me right now, neither has yours." She teased him.

After they made love on the rooftop, they lied down and gazed at the stars, both talking their heart out.

"I don't want you to go back." Adam suddenly said turning to her.

"You know I have to."

"Why can't you work for our company?"

"I can think of many reasons. First of all, I don't want to live far away from my mom. Secondly, I would be dating the boss, which is a bad idea. On top of that, my potential boss is quite demanding." She pulled his nose playfully.

"Speaking of bosses, you better tell me if your current boss tries anything funny with you." He said grimly.

Anne giggled at his jealousy. "David won't. Trust me. He is one sour guy." She said crinkling her nose comically.

"Good for me." Adam said, as he kissed her again.
