Chapter Twenty Four - Confrontation
The first day at her office was quite uneventful. Her boss was in his mid twenties. He briefed her about the job description and benefits. Some of it went over her head so she spaced out for some time. Yet that did not stop her from nodding her head at his every word. She was expected to join after 3 days.
She signed the contract and left the office fumbling for her phone. She had half a mind to hail a cab , when she saw Adam's car approaching. He was alone.
"Where's Tanya?" She asked.
"Dropped her off as soon as you left. She gets on my nerves."
"But still, you love her." She nudged.
"She is literally like my kid sister , the annoyance and all." They burst out laughing.
"What about Neil?"
"He's my bro, you know? My partner in crime." He shrugged.
"And me?"
He took a deep breath and sighed, "I don't know what I'd do without you."
Anne had to suppress a squeal which was threatening to get out.
"Just so you know , nothing happened last night." Adam confessed.
"What do you mean nothing happened? You marked me. And I remember bits and pieces of us making out." She finished in a low voice, not able to look at him anymore.
"Yeah, I mean we made out and all. But you were so out of it. You started snoring, so I had to stop." Adam said nonchalantly
"I do not snore."
*Flashback*
"But... But... I really want to... " Anne whined and pouted with added puppy dog eyes for effect.
Adam chuckled, "Cute. But I don't want you to do something you'll regret tomorrow." He tucked her in and kissed her forehead.
*End Flashback*
Anne could not believe how much he had changed. Her respect for him increased tenfolds. But there was no way she was gonna tell him that. No need to feed his already big ego.
"Oh but you do. Poor dog next door was barking all night. He must have thought some alien creature was invading Earth." He was rambling on when he saw the way Anne was looking at him, clearly she hadn't heard what he said."What?" He snapped his fingers.
"What?"
"What are you looking at me like that for? Are you sick?" He tested her forehead for temperature.
She flushed at the goosebumps making its way up her neck.
"We're here." Adam stopped the car in front of her house.
"Take care." He kissed her cheek and she got off the car. She was about to open the door, when she heard yelling in the house.
"Oh here she comes, little princess. She doesn't come home all night and next day a guy drops her off." Her dad was yelling at her mother.
"Oh are you my father now?" She challenged.
"You slut." He slapped Anne and her mom pulled her back. Her eyes were blazing with rage but she said in a calm voice, "I think you have overstayed your welcome."
Everyone looked at her as if she had grown a second head. She never talked back to her husband.
"Wait..." He tried to coax her.
"No, gather your stuff and get out of my house, NOW!!!"
As he was leaving with his other family, she held Anne, who was crying into her arms.
He looked back at them one last time, and banged the door shut before leaving.
"Are you ok?" Anne got a text from Adam. Apparently, he was outside the whole time.
"Yeah." She replied. She didn't want him to worry.
"I'll come to your room."
"Maybe that isn't such a good idea."
"I need to see you."
She looked at her mom. It looked like she needed some space anyways. She feigned a headache and went to her room.
Adam was already in her room. "I'm sorry. It was my fault."
"Don't be. He is finally gone."
"So, you're not moving out?"
"No." She smiled faintly at him and he pulled her into a hug.
