Chapter Twenty Eight -Cleaning Up the Act
It had been three months since he moved to Seattle. Adam's mother, Melissa was much better now, thanks to the physiotherapy sessions. She could walk with the help of cane.
However, they could not leave Seattle due to business obligations. He had to learn all aspects of business, from trade, negotiations to grievance handling and financial management.
"If you so much as glance at another girl, I will personally gouge out your eyes and feed it to the ducks."
He was in his office when he received text from Anne. It made him smile, despite the chaos surrounding him. His father was busy dealing with meetings with suppliers and clients, traveling extensively to different countries. With his mother resting, he needed to handle the Seattle office. He missed his old life, but he knew deep within his heart, that there was no turning back to his old ways now.
"Trust me, Anne. No other girl can captivate my attention like you do. I miss you."
He replied with his smile intact. They had to make this long distance thing work. It was different when Anne went to Australia. They were just friends back then.
His phone rang. It was Anne. Before he could answer the call, his assistant entered, "They are ready for you, sir."
He nodded and followed him to the meeting room. He would have to call her back later.
As he entered the meeting room, the employees stood up, ending their chatter abruptly. He could see it in their eyes, they did not deem him mature or eligible enough to lead them.
He cleared his throat and began addressing them, "Ladies and gentlemen. I know these last months have been hard to cope for everybody. Me and my family being busy with my mother's recovery. We always put our family first. That being said, you all are a part of our family too. The last thing we would want, is for you to suffer on our account. That is why, I would want to pick up where we left off. I have devoted all this time learning the tricks of the trade. However, ...." He gave a once-over glance to all of the people in the room, gesturing with open arms. "... I believe you all will co-operate with me, and help me continue what my mother had been doing. We will work together, as a team, to ensure we will surpass everyone's expectations."
Everybody clapped and cheered showing their support. They continued the meeting making strategies how to maximize their sales.
Meanwhile, Anne was disappointed when Adam did not pick up her call after she tried so many times. She really wanted to hear his voice. She could not help but feel inadequate. What if he had indeed found someone who captured his attention? He was a guy after all. She found herself at wits end and called Neil.
"Well well well, Miss Miller has finally found time to call me." Neil teased.
"Hello to you too." She pouted.
"What's up?" She could hear the sound of television in the background go mute.
"What are you doing this evening?"
