Makenna came to the clearing and when she looked up, she immediately stopped in her tracks.
What's he doing here?
She stared at Atlas who sat on one side of his bike, looking at something down the road. There was a pretty view of the ocean from where he stood, but more or less like a teaser to her safe haven. She let her gaze roam his face. It looked like he was lost in his thoughts and a part of her couldn't deny how handsome he was.
Makenna frowned as that thought crossed her mind and she was so embarrassed of herself that she looked away from him for a second. She breathed out and looked back at him just at the same time he turned in her direction. The second he saw her, he pushed away from his bike so that he was standing, fully.
Makenna swallowed when she realized she had all his attention. She liked it better when he didn't know she was there. She felt her pulse pick up as a wave of nervousness hit her out of nowhere.
Atlas wanted to wave to her, but he didn't want to look stupid so he settled for a smile that ended up being a smirk. That's when she made her way towards him and he didn't take his eyes off her, not for a second.
She stopped a few feet away from him, looking from his bike to him. He could see the questions in her eyes and he wanted her to voice them, but she remained quiet.
"I heard about the car," He finally broke the silence,
Even then, she didn't say anything.
"I thought might like a ride back."
Makenna blinked at him not knowing what to say or do. The last time he'd shown up, she'd almost bitten his head off and here they were again, only this time, she wasn't mad at seeing him. Not with those charming eyes.
There was a groaning sound and a smile appeared on his face that made her quickly look away, embarrassed.
"I'm sorry," She placed a hand on her stomach, "It's been a long day."
"She speaks,"
Makenna looked up at him again to find the smile still on his face.
"I was looking forward to prying the words out of your mouth."
There was something about the way he said the word mouth while glancing at hers, that turned Makenna's breath shallow. Lightly, she parted her lips and her shoulders rose a fell with each breath. Without meaning to, her gaze dropped to his lips and she felt herself get sucked into a dizzying haze that she remembered all too well.
When she lifted her gaze to meet his, he had an intense look in his eyes that held her captive. There was a tightness at the base of her neck that needed some relief, so she looked away from him and got the much-needed oxygen that alleviated the tightness.
Atlas hadn't meant to imply what his words had suggested. He simply enjoyed the challenge that she put up at every point. And getting her to talk would've been another one. But there was just something in the air anytime they were together. Even if she wanted to deny it, he couldn't.
There was something going on between them. He couldn't explain what it was and he knew for certain that Makenna couldn't either. No matter how much she tried to hide that there was something there, he knew they'd passed the point of avoiding it the day she kissed him of her own free will.
He wanted to explore this feeling with her but he wanted her to come to him. Else, he was at risk of scaring her off.
Atlas swallowed and slowly let out a quiet breath. Reaching behind him, he grabbed the helmet and walked towards her. She finally looked at him when he was standing close to her and looking at her from where he stood about undid him. Her green eyes were like a siren's call for him.
Atlas' fingers fumbled with the helmet's chin strap, but he got it eventually.
"You need to wear the helmet,"Makenna found that being this close to him scared her. But there was also something exciting about it that intrigued her. Of course, she knew what it was to be in his arms and kiss those lips; those memories failed to stop hunting her thoughts.
She nodded but kept her gaze fixed on his face. Atlas thought it was cute but kept his thoughts to himself knowing she would not appreciate it.
He lifted his hand, second-guessing his action. But her gaze moved to his hand and back to his face. The curiosity in her eyes fueled him and his hand finally reached close to her face. He swept her hair across her shoulder and let it fall behind her. He'd intentionally missed a lock of hair and when he went back for it, he felt the texture between his fingers. Then he tucked it behind her ear letting the tips of his finger trail down her neck.
Makenna's gaze was locked on his face as his gaze focused on her hair. There was a smile lingering at the corner of his mouth when he played with her hair. She hated that she wanted to do the same, but something about this side of him made her forget how to be her bold self.
Atlas lifted the helmet over her head which got her attention. He placed it on her head and slid it on carefully.
"There," He said catching a smile on her face as he did the chin strap,When he was done, he turned around and went to his bike which made Makenna frown,
"Where's yours?""As long as you have one, I'm fine." He got on his bike, "Hop on,"
Makenna wasn't letting that end there just like that, but she also knew it wasn't the time to breach that with him. She hopped on behind him.
"Let's get you something to eat,"
Before she could object, his bike's engine roared to life and he drove off, heading towards Boathouse 19.
